One way steinbeck expresses loneliness through the novel is by using motif. As said many times by George “guys like [them] have no family and belong no place” (Steinbeck 54 ) this expresses how lonely he really is. George does not understand what having a friend feels like even if he has Lennie because he still feels lonely. Throughout the the story when the words that had the letter “S” slurred with a hissing sound almost sounding like a snake. A snake leads to temptation as known by the story of Adam and Eve. In the story Curley's wife represents a snake because just like the snake in the Adam and Eve story, she disobeyed rules to get attention because she was lonely. Also known to be lonely is no other than Adam and Eve's son Cain. Cain was a jealous brother who wanted attention and came to conclusions, to get it he needed to kill his very loved brother. And when God heard about this he wasn’t pleased and punishes Cain by marking him by scar. Cain was so embarrassed that he went and hid for the rest of his life and was lonely.
