But when Elizabeth Proctor comes to prove that he is, judge Danforth ask if what he says is true and she replies with “no sir”(Miller ###). Here Elizabeth is trying to protect John Proctor from losing reputation as a good Christian by lying, when in reality she caused even more problems by doing so. Again it is proven that when it comes down to trying to save someone else a person is willing to lie about anything in order to do so if that is all it takes. However, after signing his name on a confession paper that would be nailed on the church door for all to see, John Proctor tears the paper to pieces claiming that he can finally “see some shred of goodness” in himself (Miller 212). Had he made that final lie of confessing, people would have believed in the witch trials again causing the trials to continue on much longer than they should have. Therefore, by not committing another lie, John Proctor both is forgiven in the eyes of his God for his own sins and condemned to death as punishment for those sins as well.
