Often times it takes the courage and motivation of only one person to spark change or trigger a revolution. This theme of how it only takes one person to make a difference can be explored and inspected in texts such as “I am Malala,” “The Right Thing to do at the Time,” Mississippi Trial 1955, and To Kill a Mockingbird. In George Garrett’s “The Right Thing to do at the Time,” the author’s father, Mr. Garrett, stands up to the Florida state-officials about a traffic ticket that he was unjustifiably given. Correspondingly, in John Stewart’s “I am Malala,” a Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, explains her passion and motivation for female schooling and makes her statement clear when she retracts to her memory to the time she stood up against…
The song starts out with a strang questioning of reality: “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality, Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see”. They first two lines are rhetorical questions. They help establish the state of mind needed in order to continue with the song. The third line is a metaphor. It means everything is crashing down on him, and he cannot escape it. It seems to conclude that he is caught between a dream and awakening. The next couple set of lines are being used as transitions into the main part of stanza one, “I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I’m easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Any way the wind blows, Doesn’t really matter to me, to me”. In the third and fourth line repetition is used in order to keep the lyrics flowing. The boy thinks his life doesn’t matter to anyone, his life is meaningless and the Earth does not care what happens to him. He does not care what happens next, he just wants it over; “any way the wind blows” him, he will go and it “doesn’t really matter” to him anymore. The next three lines show intent to kill by the boy, “Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead”. The boy has finally come to terms of what he has…
. This song is about someone having to live up to the expectations someone else wants for them. They are pressured into having to be exactly like that person. This wonderfully crafted novel, Anthem by: Ayn Rand suggested many ideas concerning how effective and “perfect” utopian societies are. In the story our protagonist, equality, lives in a utopian society in the future however the societies technology isn’t very futuristic. All of what we have know has been stripped from the society to the point where they don’t have electricity and they use candles for light and primitive ways of farming instead of more productive ways to mass produce crops. Equality’s society is also practices extreme collectivism. The citizens were taught from a very young age that nothing good can come about unless you work together with your fellow brothers. Engraved in their palace of the world council there is a moral “we are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, one, indivisible and forever.” However, in this “we” based world, equality finds himself drifting away from his brothers and after he finds this deserted tunnel he starts escaping to it and writing his own thoughts and performing his own experiments and he comes up with a light bulb, he then shows this light to a council of scholars who basically rejected his idea and he ran away from the society to a forest where he then lives in an abandoned house with another runaway citizen liberty, and they fall in love.…

This song explores an emotion we've all felt: a yearning to go back to the place where we grew up, to reconnect with the sense of security or simpler times we once knew, especially when our lives are troubled. There's tremendous appeal in this theme and it's handled well here. We're right there with the singer as she knocks on the door, talks to the people who live in the house, and describes the things that happened there as she grew up, all the while hinting at the troubles that have driven her back home to try to heal.…
The theme of It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is life is filled with problems, but you need to work through them, and learn about yourself. An example of this being the theme is while Craig is in the hospital he discovers his love for art after realizing how much he enjoys art Craig decides to go to art school instead of his original high school. By adding this the author wanted the reader to recognize Craig making concrete plans for his future. This showed that Craig learned about himself and what he enjoys doing giving him a reason to live. This reminds me of when I was younger and played club soccer. Another example of this being the theme is the end of the book when Craig continuously tells himself to live. This is significant…

The abstract idea of the use of Little Rock in the song was to highlight the crisis taking place in 1957, when a group of young African- American students (as known as the Little Rock 9), were denied and prevented from entering a segregated high school. This event actually happened 3 years after the Brown v. Education, which was a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in public school systems unconstitutional. Ole Miss was a similar case of the Little Rock 9, where James Meredith became the first African- American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi, which resulted in a riot between Southern segregationists and government officials. These two topics relate to each other because they both featured a moment of violation of the constitution, which stated segregation situations like the ones stated in the lyrics of the song are unconstitutional. The conflicts both have had government actions taken to reassure the historical African-American students were going to go further than what they came for. These topics relate to U.S history due to the fact that these events triggered a new evolution of equality among race, resulting in boycotts, powerful speeches, and much more that involved the movement of the American soil. These events both came to symbolize both massive resistance to social change and the government’s commitment to enforcing African-American civil…
The book I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai is a powerful autobiography about the 18 year old educational activist. In her speech, Malala says, “Let us pick up our books and our pens,”- “They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world” (Page 310). My take away was that, we should educate the world through books and pens, because education can send a more powerful message than any of the weapons of the Taliban. And that it would not take much, because just “one teacher, one book, and one pen could change the world” and achieve this goal. This quote is conveyed multiple times throughout her autobiography, but not as straight forward. For example,…
The theme of Growing Up is to enjoy your childhood and don't grow up too fast. I think this is the theme because on page 8 it said " She hugged her doll.Something was happening to her, and it might be that she was growing up.When The news ended , and a song started playing, she got up and washed her face without looking in the mirror." This shows that the theme is to enjoy your childhood because that worry that Maria felt is only felt by adults. As kids you don't realize how easy you have it and how hard life really…
