Lang uses rhetoric language in his poem. Lang uses words to help create the tone, mood, and emotion. Some rhetorical pattering: “taketh,” “maketh,” “to throw,” “can stow,” “fro,” “without a blow,” and “ebb and flow.” Lang repeats “These alone can ne’er bestow Youth, and health, and Paradise.” This means that money and treasure can’t bring you to your younger self, healthier self, or take you to Paradise. Which by “paradise” I’m guessing Lang means heaven.…
To me, the poem appears to be comparing our youthful years as being as valuable as gold. We are to enjoy our time when we are young for it is the "…hardest hue to hold…" on to. It is also saying that our childhood years are very short and feels like "…but only so an hour…" As we grow older, our garden of "…Eden sank to grief…" The beginning of our life will quickly end as "…dawn goes down to day…" So in the end "…nothing gold can stay…" which refers to the end of our innocence. (All quotes taken from…
“Nothing Gold Can Stay” is a modernist work because it has rejection of sentimentality and artificiality by saying nothing gold or good can stay. In this poem it says at the start everything is gold or perfect then it goes away in the end which has loss of faith. It is rejecting Eden as a hero and who is flawed.…
In this poem there is a strong sense of honesty and sombre in the tone. This is shown through the harsh truth that is being exposed about humans and their loss of traditional roots and beginnings. The poem by has no particular rhythm scheme, but instead uses free verse to add to the sense of a natural life.Homo Suburbiensis begins by “One constant in a world of variables – a man alone in the evening in his patch of vegetables” this juxtaposing image illustrates man as the “one constant” because the world around him continues to change and adapt as humans insist on creating a built environment, but man has remained the same and will always find their way back to the roots and beginning which is the environment. This image also portrays an image of individuals against a world that is no longer peaceful, but rather it is now a world of chaos and orderly structure. The poem shows a major contradiction as human have tried to re create the environment and turn it into a place of ownership and property but the land knows no limit as the land will, regardless of any boundaries set, return into its natural self and grow and expand into places that man cannot stop. This is shown through the quote “where the easement runs along the back fence and the air smells of tomato-vines”. Furthermore, irony is shown in this poem by the growth of a vegetable sprawling over a compost bin. The irony of nature fighting against a man made creation for doing a job that nature can do alone in time shows that nature is powerful and can do a job without interference. The…

Kino, the doctor, and the pearl buyers all emphasize this theme.…
Laura Hillenbrand’s monumental Unbroken is a true story of a promising young Olympic runner from Torrance, California. This promise was soon broken because of the upcoming Second World War, a time period of ferocity and sadism. During this war, many were captivated, many died, only a few came out in a single piece known as war heroes. The war wasn’t the end for these heroes, many caught on with the phrase, post-war life. Post-war life had many survivors on another set of problematic and unforgettable experience. Most Americans initially viewed their place in the postwar world with optimism and confidence. But within two years of the end of the war, new challenges and perceived threats had arisen to erode that confidence. The ultimate hero was…

Throughout the entire poem, the speaker continuously asks questions debating what makes life worth living. The speaker’s confused mental state is expressed through rhetorical questions. The narrator asks, “Oh cold reprieve, where’s natural relief?” Here, the narrator wonders where he may find an escape from life, from the grief he was told to pursue. The answer is actually from within him. This results in a poem with dialogue between the narrator’s conscience and heart; the heart being the Echo. The Echo’s answer of “Leaf” leads the narrator to reflect on the death of leaves; leaves bloom beautifully and change into various colors. Making “ecstasy” of the flower’s dying process. He wonders, “Yet what’s the end of our life’s long disease? If death is not, who is my enemy,” but then the Echo calls itself the foe. Though leaves age beautifully, people do not, for aging is a disease of life that cannot be escaped.…

The reference to Robert Frost's poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is introduced by Ponyboy, as he recites it to Johnny in the Windrixville Church.…
As Johnny had said to Ponyboy “stay gold” which refers to when Ponyboy recites the poem “ Nothing gold can stay” to Johnny in the church. The qualities that I feel allow me to stay gold were passed down to me at a young age. The strength and values being passed down from generation to generation feel as though they have grown stronger with time. My golden qualities are that I’m honorable, I’m ethical, and a nurturer.…
In the first stanza the scene and atmosphere is set, "we stood by a pond that winter day".No harsh sounds are present and the sentence epitomises the tranquillity yet disheartening nature of the poem. In the second line we get even more of these very "neutral" monosyllabic words "the sun was white, as though chidden of God" in this sentence the poets attempt to stay within his own themes are very explicit by the use of the adjective "white" to describe the sun, the sun normally represented by the color yellow and a symbol for happiness and life. The very dismal atmosphere is reinforced by the use of the alliteration of "L creating a lazy yet unsatisfying tone. The further sibilance of "starving sod creates a harsh sound, adding a further layer of hopelessness. The metaphor of the "few leaves"symbolises the end of an era, hinting towards the dying of life. Yet, it is not life that died, but love.…
In The Alchemist, the seer asks the camel driver why he wants to know his future, and the camel driver responds, “because I am a man…And men always live their lives based on the future.” (Coelho 107) Upon the camel driver’s answer, the seer refuses to cast the twigs, insisting that the future cannot be told, only guessed at. He goes on to tell the camel driver that the “secret is here in the present.” (Coelho 108) This is fitting with one of the many themes of The Alchemist, that one shouldn't anticipate the future more than they live in the present. This theme appears later in the novel when the alchemist tells Santiago, “fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself.” (Coelho 137) It is a theme that is offered several times over the course of the book, each time it helped Santiago on his journey. This suggests that the author intends for us to accept this theme as a truth.…
The title of the poem is metaphorical and gold represents value and wealth so when it says nothing gold can stay it means that nothing that is precious or of great value in the materialistic way can stay forever. As gold symbolises materialism it wont last for long and it will give us gfake happinessh and another thing is that gold and other things which are money based can take years to accumulate but can be washed away in a millisecond. On the other hand, things having emotion and sentimental values cannot be bought with money and therefore will remain with us throughout our life.…
