In Franz Kafka’s, Metamorphosis, a travelling salesman named Gregor Samsa, awakens to find himself suddenly transformed into a giant bug. Gregor faces harsh and resentful treatment from his family after his transformation, which suggests that Kafka views the world as cruel and exploitive. Gregor is introduced as the main source of income for the Samsa household and when Gregor is no longer able to work, his family is faced with financial issues due to massive debt. Gregor feels guilty that he can no longer provide for his family, given his condition. Gregor’s sister, Grete, nurtures and takes cares of Gregor; however, Grete’s sympathy and willingness to take care of him diminishes and eventually the entire family begins to resent Gregor for the burden of his inhuman existence. …show more content…
Throughout the story, Gregor is very distraught about the strain his transformation has put on his family; Gregor’s retired father begins working again in order to sustain the family, Grete takes care of Gregor, and his mother faints when she sees him. Despite Gregor’s sympathy for his family in regards to his condition, his family fails to return the same feeling. Tensions grow between Gregor and his family as time goes on; His father abuses and injures Gregor whenever he comes out of his room, Grete becomes resentful, and eventually the entire family agrees that if the bug were truly Gregor, he would have left to spare them the burden of taking care of him. Metamorphosis ends with the death of Gregor and the happy and fulfilling life Gregor’s family begins to live after he is
