“If you look for perfection, you'll never be content.” This quote by Leo Tolstoy reveals the cruelty in the idea of perfection and how the idea of perfection is a barrier for society’s contentment. Society today is enthralled with the idea of perfection and we sacrifice our contentment in search of what we think will be a greater, more satisfying and glorious life. Flawless by Lara Chapman, Soul Surfer by Sean McNamara, Bunheads by Sophie flack and Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult are all stories how the idea of perfection shapes society and in turn shapes our beliefs and behaviour, stopping us from being truly content.

The majority of society believes the idea of perfection in females to be busty, curvy and tall however in the world of dance one must be willowy, lean and have a straight figure. Hannah feels the stressed when she is told that she is developing unwanted curve and is told to diet intensely, exercise more and wear a tight contraption around her chest to make her flat. What’s appalling is that Hannah is nineteen. The idea of perfection has driven the girls to believe that their natural state of being is faulty and ugly and to take drastic measure to “fix” themselves. Hannah had to reject Jacob because of the pressure she faced with this issue “Jacob,” she murmured “I actually can’t make it anymore, this dancing stuff is getting crazy again”. Perfection is unreachable and yet our whole world has an obsession for it. It is important that we realise that life is not about aiming for something that doesn’t exist; it’s about enjoying what we do and having dreams that can come into fruition. I believe that Flawless by Lara Chapman, Soul surfer By Sean McNamara, Bunheads by Sophie Flack and Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult, all showed a significant connection to the idea of perfection. The main connections I found were that the idea of perfection creates a feeling of entrapment in situation and causes us to feel hopeless. All characters form my books had different family dynamics and their actions were reflections of these. I also saw many indications of how perfection causes our perspectives of others to change and how we act towards them, we are more cynical and cruel to those around us because we think are not equal with them or they are not equal with us and we want to change others around us because our idea of perfection is warped. It is inevitable, and written into our human nature to want to be better than everyone else and to be faultless, however the idea of perfection is indeed a barrier for contentment and
