Theme Of Racial Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird

Racism is a vice that causes conflict between communities and individuals to be accepted as one. Throughout the novel black people are targeted because of their skin and race, but not as their individual identities. Tom Robinson, an individual of color was not accepted in a society where white people lived. Many characters target black people such as Bob Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Mr.Gilmer, not because of what he was falsely accused of but the fact that he was black.”[A]ll Negroes lie, and all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber”[Lee, 273]. This quotation reveals how black people were targeted and stereotyped, they were not respected and treated as equals.
