Themes In Antigone

Theme #1: As death slowly isolates Antigone by taking away those dearest to her heart, she feels as if her home is below with the ones she cares about rather than in a corrupt world full of animosity. She tries coping with the pain but desperately needs to connect with death to maintain her happiness. Antigone also tries to escape her fate through death but safeguards the respect of the gods while doing so “[...]all for reverence, my reverence for the gods (1034)”. However, Antigone's obdurance causes her to loose reverence for Creon inspite of all he has put her family through. While trying to please both the gods and herself, Antigone portrays how the inevitable fate of losing her family overshadows her reason to live.
Theme #2: Fighting for justice to provide her brother with a proper burial, Antigone tries to use her determination as another factor to end her life. Antigone’s confidence allows her to stand up to Creon and demand her rights knowing the possible consequences. On the other hand, Ismene, abides by the Kings decree just like everyone else to free herself from blame and undermines Antigone saying,
Creon scorns Antigone because he thinks she is spitefully disobeying him by glorifying her actions. Little does he know that all the citizens of Thebes are proud of Antigone for standing up for her brother because the rest of them are to afraid of the consequences to do so. She knows a decree has been send out against her brothers burial but decided to speak the truth to Creon saying, “ What greater glory could I win/ than to give my own brother decent burial?/ These citizens here would all agree,/ they would praise me too/ if their lips weren't locked in fear” (560-65).
