Arnold and Rowdy have been bestfriends since they were born. After Arnold’s sister Mary dies, and after their fight, Rowdy will still be by Arnold's side. There are many themes present in the book,”The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian”. One particular theme that is present throughout the story is true friendship last even through the toughest times. Throughout the book, Sherman Alexie present’s many themes, one particular theme is friendship. Arnold and Rowdy are like family, they need each other to function right, and don't feel right when they are apart. One quotation that supports friendship is, “I know that Rowdy is your best friend, but if you stay in
Wellpinit you will be like every other Indian on this rez”(Alexie 41). This quote demonstrates the theme of friendship because it shows that Arnold doesn't want to leave Rowdy, but will have to if he wants to better himself. Another quote that supports friendship is, “my house is a safe place, so Rowdy spends most of his time with us, its like hes a family member, an extra brother or something”(Alexie 17). This quote demonstrates the theme of friendship because it shows that Rowdy is like a family member to Arnold, they will stand by each others side through even the worst times. Another quote that supports friendship is , “I bolter into the woods and ran full speed into Rowdy's, he had been watching my sister's burial this whole time”(Alexie 209-210). This quote shows that even though Rowdy and Arnold are fighting, Rowdy still wants to show Arnold that he still cares about him. Even after their fight, Arnold and Rowdy are still family. After all that Rowdy and Arnold have been through, they still are best friends and family.
