Theoretical Basis For Advanced Nursing Practice
I would advise my colleague Mary about my experience with the nursing theory during my undergrad years and how it was very limited. The information learned then was given during the fundamentals of nursing class. We did not have a class dedicated to nursing theory. Taking NR501 Theoretical Basis for Advanced Nursing Practice will introduce advanced practice students to a more in-depth study. The theory class taken today will not only serve as a refresher, but also will go into depth about the theorist, how the theories are applied to the nursing practice and their contribution to the nursing profession. Nursing theory is important to the nursing profession and practice. According to McCrae (2012), theory may help practitioners to articulate

Have you questioned the relevance of taking a theory course in your graduate nursing program, or the usefulness of theory in nursing practice? In the case study provided, Julia Costales was skeptical about theory in nursing practice, and on a day at the veterans’ administration (VA) inpatient medical unit, she was caring for a complex patient. The medical unit’s acute care nurse practitioner challenged her to identify theories that would help guide care for her patient. McEwen (2014a) explains that, “Use of theory also promotes rational and systematic practice by challenging and validating intuition. Theories make nursing practice more overtly purposeful by stating not only the focus of practice but also specific goals and outcomes” (p. 25).…

Theory is a notion or an idea that explains experience, interprets observation, describes relationships and projects outcomes (Parker & Smith, pg. 7). Theory is needed to have a systematic approach to guiding the practice of nursing by analyzing nursing concepts that are purposeful in developing thinking and guiding practice through proven research and analysis. Theory helps to organize knowledge within a discipline and to make sense of it in a way that advances how the discipline is practices.…

    Orem's Nursing Theory

There are many situations in nursing care where a nurse would apply a nursing theory. As Hood mentioned, a particular nursing theory may fit a clinical situation better than others (Hood, 2014, p.149). This allows the nurse to use the wide array of models to give care that is patient centered. The theory that appealed to me most is Orem’s theory. Orem’s theory states that “the purpose of nursing is to help people meet their self-care needs” (Hood, 2014, p.136). This I feel plays an important part in the recovery of the patient.…

At the beginning of this class, I had very little understanding of the way theory and nursing research are related. I knew nursing research was useful for practice, and I had had much experience with finding and analyzing nursing research. However, I was having a hard time making the connection between theory and its usefulness in practice. The presentation by Lori Loan really helped me to make some of those crucial connections between theory and research. The most useful thing I learned from Lori was how to use theory as a framework to build and organize research. Research questions can be extremely complex, and it is hard to know how to organize all of the variables involved. I learned in this class that theory provides a mold into which one can fit data. In this way, theory guides research, and research guides practice. Since some theories predict, you can test a hypothesis with more certainty that it will be confirmed and therefore waste less time and resources on research. Another important thing I learned from Lori is that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to research. Science is continually building a body of knowledge, and you can use work that someone else has already done, to make sense of your own research questions or to clarify which questions you should be asking.…

Nurses will use theories in their practice to help guide them through their daily tasks, patient assessments and also to help make and individualize patient goals and interventions to provide the best care. Nurses study theory as it helps assist the student in building their critical thinking skills. Theories provide a good foundation for clinical practice, improved communication between nurses, better patient care and guidance for research and education. When nurses comprehend and use nursing theory in their practice along with their intuition and compassion, they should become an efficient and strong nurse. All of these traits are important in our daily lives as nurses. Having these theories in place helps nurses to use their critical thinking skills in order to provide our…

Nursing theories can help create and promote a healthy professional environment for patients and members of the healthcare team. They assist as building blocks and guide assessment, interventions, and evaluation of nursing care. They also assist nurses in describing, explaining, and predicting everyday experiences. Nursing theory improves nursing practice by strengthening the nursing focus of care and facilitates the nursing discipline in analyzing goals, values, and beliefs. It improves the health and quality of life of the patient, their families, and the community.…

Nursing theories are important to our practice because they “can inform the way in which we view the person, health, the environment and nursing itself”(Funnell, Koutikidis & Lawrence 2005, p.25.) Nursing theories also tell us the “why and when nursing takes place and give us an…

Advanced practice nurses are expected to practice with competence skills throughout their careers. Hamric's Model of Advanced Nursing Practice identifies several core competencies, these competencies require that APNs utilize a depth and breadth of knowledge, skill and judgment that allow them to safely practice and competently adapt to changes in the health care environment. The two competencies that I opted to enlist in my practice are leadership and consultation. I believe these two competencies will lead me in my practice as FNP to improve the delivery of care of my patients. Leadership, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." stated by U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Leaders do more than delegate, dictate, and direct. They help others to achieve their highest potential, and foster communication between members of the multidisciplinary care team. Leaders have a distinctive set of personal qualities: integrity, courage, and an ability to manage stress. As well, Involves…
