There Is No Need For Pitbulls Summary
In There is no need for pit bulls by Dr. David A. Billmire he talks about how pit bulls are not needed in today’s society and how they shouldn’t be pets. He starts out his story talking about his past experiences with dog bites. Most of which were caused by a dog that was provoked, but then he states, “In every instance the dog involved was a pit bull or a pit bull mix.” Billmire is now stating that every dog bit that he saw was in fact from a pit bull. He wants to stress his point later on when he states, “Pit bulls were bred to fight and kill … there is no need for any dog with the characteristics.” The point that he is trying to state is a dog that was bred to be vicious shouldn’t be even in question to remove from society. He then goes

Those who fall into this category should have a big head with a short, square muzzle, brindle in colour, large in size, muscular build, docked tails and many more characteristics. The thing is, some of these are not even common to Pit Bulls (Pit Bull University). Pit Bulls are the most misunderstood dogs in today’s society and things don’t seem to be lighting up. Despite this common opinion, an experiment was once performed. Fifty Pit Bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Forty nine of the fifty dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, extensive, and carefully carried out. Pit Bulls are different from other dogs and potential owners need to be made aware of the facts before considering rescuing or purchasing one. For example, a dog lover who has had Bichons all her life will be sorely surprised unless she does her homework and understand the bully breeds. Pits need a lot of structure, a very pronounced human alpha, training, exercise and lots of attention. The owner needs consistency, time, energy and quite possibly some…

According to the commentary “Are Pit Bulls Different?” by Randall Lockwood and Katie Rindy, “any stocky short haired animal involved in an attack is likely to be recorded as a Pit Bull. It is not unusual to find newspaper accounts of ‘Pit Bull attacks’ accompanied by a picture of a Boxer, Pug, or some other breed” (Lockwood and Rindy 2-3). Recent research and DNA analysis has shown that dogs commonly identified as Pit Bulls are usually a mix of many different breeds. This study is just another aspect that proves breed identification by appearance alone is now considered to be inaccurate. This is a good thing, because it lets us look at this breed as a fascinating American phenomena rather than just an identifiable item with fixed behaviors and definable features (Reflecting). Breeds commonly mistaken as the Pit Bull are the Boxer, Presa Canario, Dogo Argentino, Bull Mastiff, Cane Corso, Tosainu, Alapha Blue Blood Bulldog, and the Dogue de Boreaux (The Truth). There really is no accurate way to determine the aggressiveness of a breed, when it is so difficult to distinguish between certain breeds that have such similar physical…

According to Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisper from animal planet reported, “The Difference between an aggressive Chihuahua and a aggressive Pitbull is that the bigger breed can cause proportionately bigger damage.” Pitbull’s that are aggressive normally come from an environment where they were trained or bred to attack and fight humans or animals. A theory suggest Pitbull’s originated from England at the time of the Norman conquest in 1066 when butchers would use large, mastiff type dogs as “Bullen beissers” which translates as “bull biter”. One popular saying that most people know is “If you throw a dog a bone, expect him to bite.” With so many dog bites and attacks each year, it is easy to blame the dog. Pit bull attacks are the leading dog attacks in the United States. Although pit bulls can be very loving and friendly dogs, most people often perceive them to be vicious killers. This judgement is unfair because people do not understand why they bite. The general public needs to be better educated about pit bulls, such as why they have a bad reputation, what we can do to fix their reputation, and why they are great dogs to have as family pets.…
