There was a lot that contributed to the mood but this single line contributed a lot. “Shabby state of the compound - roads rutted and washed out many places-map of sanctuary had been knocked off post” (Fugard 567). This story relates in theme to a free verse poem by Carl Sandburg named "Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind". The common question is: "How in the world do these 2 pieces of work relate in theme? Ignorance and materialism negatively affects humans some way or another, and society only increases these lifestyles. Whether or not we believe it, ignorance and materialism is a daily part in our lives today; thus, we cannot live without it. We try to ease our problems by blindingly accepting society’s norms and trends. Because we cannot formulate our own ideals and ways of life, we live in a false sense of justice and peace. In Tony Hoagland’s “Hard Rain,” the speaker witnesses these faults in our behavior at a shopping mall; however, he, similarly, is not able to escape that reality. The larger meaning of this poem, that we have no sense of individualism and morality, is specified by the author’s usage of diction and the disappointing, humorous, and controversial tone he uses to prove it.…

In the story the author used both reality and fantasy ( the supernatural being that took over the house) to create a sense of eeriness. The characters spend their days doing normal things like cleaning and knitting, and acting like absolutely nothing is wrong, which is an example of a recognizable character. Everything in the house is according to the narrator, “nothing special”, which is a great example of one of the key elements, a realistic setting. While the characters are acting as nothing is wrong, a supernatural being is beginning to take over the house, and eventually completely takes over the entire house. Throughout the entire story the characters keep an uninterested tone, they always seem to be calm. The author’s use of these elements in the story helps it to be an excellent example of the Magical Realism…

I plan to have face-lifts until my ears meet.” Many people use plastic surgery today, but it has been giving people second chances since the early 1800’s. People who have burns or that have been in accidents were given second chances at being the ideal image of “normal”. Some people are born with obesities in their genetics or are just over weight, and the only option is to receive plastic surgery. However, like most positive aspects in life, there are always negative results from time to time. Whether a person is receiving plastic surgery due to a tragic event, being over weight, or just for improving a minor flaw, they are seeking out the same end result.…
