There Will Come Soft Rains Analysis Essay
In the story, “There Will Come Soft Rains” the author, Ray Bradbury writes about a detrimental nuclear explosion that has wiped out the entire human race. One thing is left standing, a smart house which had been designed to fit the needs of a human's everyday life. The house spends it’s day going through a scheduled routine, but when a tree falls through a window causing a substantial amount of damage, everything starts to plummet. The family is gone, and the house has to figure out how to survive in these harsh conditions. Bradbury uses characterization and irony to convey the theme that humans are starting to be replaced by advanced technology. Throughout the story, characterization shines through developing a very strong theme. In the …show more content…
Near the end of the story, the house was getting ready for it’s night time dues as it asks a question, and with no response, “The voice said at last, ‘Since you express no preference, I shall select a poem at random.’ ” (103) This is ironic because it shows that the house still doesn’t realize there are no longer humans. As the reader, you know the humans are gone but, this house keeps insisting they are there. This demonstrates the theme, because the house keeps going. The humans have ceased to exist, however the house still goes about it’s business, oblivious to their absence. If the house can exist without humans, it’s a logical conclusion that technology will have the capability to take our place one day. Another example of irony is when the house slowly started to fall apart, “At ten o’clock the house began to die. “ (104) This is ironic because we all know houses can’t die. Now, the house is starting to develop personal traits. Living things can only die, therefore the house is being taken on as a living thing relating back to the theme that is technology is starting to replace humans by taking on human characteristics. The final example of irony relating to the theme is at the end of the story. Although all this trauma has happened the house still continues to persevere through, “ ‘Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is…’ ” (107) It is ironic because as the reader you know that all humans are

Can you ever imagine a science fictional story being related to a free verse poem? I definitely can't. But sure enough, in the science fiction book The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, there is a story called "There Will Come Soft Rains". This story relates in theme to a free verse poem by Carl Sandburg named "Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind". The common question is: "How in the world do these 2 pieces of work relate in theme? Shockingly, however, there are many points where theme is related and compared.…

There Will Come Soft Rains has a post-apocalyptic - inspired by World War 1- and technological setting – a futuristic house. The house can be seen as somewhat of a ‘protector’ of the family and Bradbury uses lively descriptions for the setting ‘...books that talked, beds that warmed and made themselves, fires that built themselves in the fireplaces of evenings, were in the house and living there was a contentment.’ Bradbury has used this technique to show humans’ dependence on technology – the house does simple things like making a bed – and eventually how they were destroyed by their own technology. Further to this, the house can also be seen to be the master and the family its’ willing slaves. This shows how humans are becoming so dependent on technology that they are no longer able to perform simple tasks for…

In Chapter 26 of Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, he explains that any great literary work is dripping with irony. At first glance, a reader may not see the it, but a closer look at a book like Kate Chopin’s The Awakening will make a reader snicker at all the irony that comes to light. In The Awakening, the relationship between protagonist, Edna, and her husband is ironic. As Edna is approaching, sunburned, he looks at his wife “as one looks at a valuable piece of property which has suffered some damage” (Chopin, 7). Mr. Pontellier feels as though he owns his wife, but throughout the book she ignores his opinions, has affairs, and eventually leaves him. The relationship with her husband is not the only ironic one Edna has; she has a love hate relationship with her children. Trying to appease her “mother woman” friend, Adele, Edna says, “I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself” (Chopin, 80). However, Edna’s death was very selfish because instead of saving her children, she took away their mother. Edna’s death was Chopin’s great irony in The Awakening. At the end of the book, Edna wades, into the sea, purposefully, until “it [is] too late; the shore [is] far behind her, and her strength [is] gone” (Chopin, 190). Edna’s great awakening, her realization of freedom and self, leads to her suicide. Once a reader is trained to look for irony, she will never stop seeing it, adding depth and humor to the reading…

Irony, of all types, is rife in Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Dramatic irony occurs within the first thirty lines, as the narrator describes some of the bizarre aspects of her bedroom. She states that the room was previously a nursery and a gymnasium as the “windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls” (327). When she reveals more details about the room, that the wallpaper and floor is scratched and ravished and that the bed is nailed down, it becomes plausible to the reader that the room was not previously used as a nursery, but instead as a room to house an insane person. Irony is present even in the other characters in this short story. The narrator’s husband, John, is a physician as prescribes rest to cure the temporary nervous depression (326) that ails his wife. This treatment only allows the narrator to sit around, think, and obsess it eventually just causes her to become more anxious and leads her mind further towards madness.…
