The main character is Tommy. The author made him the main character because he is the one who has a problem of turning into a werewolf and because he is the one with the most dialogue throughout the story. One character in the story is the family doctor. Tommy visits the doctor because he felt frustrated with his problem. “It’s just a stage you’re going through.” The doctor told Tommy as they discussed his problem of turning into a werewolf. Tommy decides to tell his father after his visit with the doctor didn’t help him solve his problem. Lewis Gardner portrays the parents as parents who didn’t care or love their son as they should have. Gardener shows that ignoring your kids will make them more depressed about a problem because they don’t have someone to talk to you to let their feelings out. “Dad are you busy, I have a problem” Tommy tells his dad. His mom and dad carry on with another conversation instead of answering Tommy. The narrator says “Tommy decided it wasn’t time to tell his parents.” Gardner shows the emotion Tommy felt. Tommy again feels rejected and disappointed because he did not get the help he needs. Gardner adds an element of joy and romance when he meets a girl named Lily. However, that joy and romance does not last very long. Tommy and Lily “really hit it off.” Lily sets a date for Tommy and her so they can learn about each other a bit more. …show more content…
The theme of the story is that even that even though times are tough there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. We see this when Tommy goes through conflicts with his family and his community. His family didn’t really listen to his problem. He feels depressed, disappointed, and confused on what to do. Lewis Gardner emphasized this during the first part of the story when Tommy tried to tell his parents they started to talk about a different topic. The community also ignored him. When he told his doctor about his problem the doctor seemed as if he didn’t care about him at all. When he tries to tell the police chief about his problem he started talking in between Tommy’s sentences. In the end Tommy leaves his house and meets a girl who becomes his friend by the name of Mary who has the same problem.
