CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Economic housing increases in demand as the world population is stepping-up, especially in third-world countries. This situation leads in finding new raw and construction materials. Tiles are building materials used as finishing products and designed to cover floors and walls. A very ancient manufactured product, tiles are still used today in the most modern and advanced applications, but this material is expensive. That’s why the researcher wants to study about the low cost tile using sawdust, rice straw ash and clay as raw materials for fabrication of this tile. This research is subjected to floor tile.

Sawdust or wood dust is a by-product of cutting, grinding, drilling or otherwise pulverizing wood with a saw or other tool; it is composed of fine particles of wood (Wikipedia, 2012). This will be used as admixture in the study.

Rice Straw Ash is rich in silica, and a by-product of burning of rice straw. Silica is known to be very effective in enhancing the strength and durability of concrete.

Clays are distinguished from other fine-grained soils by differences in size and mineralogy. Clay is one of the oldest building materials on Earth, among other ancient, naturally-occurring geologic materials such as stone and organic materials like wood. It is contain a large proportion of iron and alumina which is nearly equals to silica (Wikipedia, 2012). And this will be used by the researcher as a binder.

A tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, or even

As you may have recently seen/heard, the war started and lasted abruptly, the bomb has obliterated the entire city of St. Louis. And I am sure you have heard of the fireman that made our town famous. Yes, the one about Sir Guy Montag, how the “fireman” had to burn his own house down for having books in his home. The rare thing about that incident was what happened after his house was burned. He burned a man and killed the other two firemen. That was the thing that set me slim. The talk in this district is mad. You almost can bet what it’s about. It is either about the fireman who set the world on fire or the bomb that hurt everyone. The survivors are going insane! There is no order in this chaos we call a town! And I, as Captain Beatty’s replacement, have a few simple proposals as in how to restore the peace to this mad house I call home. There will be no more book burnings for this town. Not only will the books be kept safe, but they will be cherished. First off, I am going to make an organization called Books for Homes. Everyone will help restore the homes that were destroyed in the horrible tragedy. Each home and family will have one book. Everyone in the household will remember that one book and have it passed down to their family and so on and so on. Everyone will have a shred of knowledge of the past and will have some type of understanding of the times before. Secondly, there will be a town cleanup for a week. Our town was already dead before the bomb; it passed away from lack of knowledge and the truth. The bomb just got rid of the carcass of the town like a vulture on a dead body. I will help this town resurrect from the ashes of what once was to what it could be. Next everyone in the town will have a food drive to help feed the families that lost everything. This town will make a complete 360 ° flip. Everyone will have to act as one and unit to make the change. It takes one step to cross the…

The ceramic tile industry has been present in Sassuolo since the 13th century, although just right after the Second World War, the demand grew. Because of this huge demand, the number of companies rose to a point where there were new industries being created every year. These companies had to compete among themselves in order to get deals with retailers, who were looking for high quality, low price and good aesthetics. The high competition among companies made the quality and originality of the tiles the main goal among producers. For this, they were improving their machines and techniques.…

The story of the Kite Runner is fictional, but it is rooted in real political and historical events ranging from the last days of the Afghan monarchy in the 1970s to the post-Taliban near present-day. Hosseini also pulls from his own memories and experiences growing up in the Wazir Akbar Khan section of Kabul and his adaptation to life in California. Khaled Hosseini’s aim was to not only call attention to the devastation in Afghanistan; he set out to remind the world that before he last few decades under the world’s scrutinizing eye highlighting the negativity of the country, Afghanistan was a generally peaceful nation.…

Bamboo, a plant with hundred of uses has long been associated with short life span products. Mankind has long exploited bamboos, like other lignocellulosic materials, for various purposes and reasons (Tewari & Bindhi Singh, 1979). They are used intensively for making a wide range of products such as house-hold items, handicrafts, paper, joss-sticks, barbecue sticks and chopsticks. It is one of the oldest light building materials used in the rural areas and villages due to its availability, low cost, strength, and high yield and renewable nature.…

In the past, the world of construction of buildings was based on wood, adobe, thatch and cave dwellings as construction materials or units. Modern engineering has developed to use the steel, concrete as basic elements of construction. Nowadays, there is a worldwide debate about which material of those two does reign supreme in the world of development. Most importantly, concrete and steel have different mechanical properties which cause a different behavior under the various conditions. A detailed comparison was done between concrete and steel in terms of safety, structural performance, cost and material availability as follows:…

Hollow blocks are one of the most used building materials in our time. Since hollow blocks weigh around 9-11 kg, it is a must for reinforcement steel to be placed into the gaps of the hollow blocks and/or to be built on a strong foundation in order to avoid settling or cracking. A higher capital is needed for a strong foundation that can hold the weight of standard concrete hollow blocks (esp. for high and large buildings). The heavier the hollow blocks, the greater the force exerted to lift them. This may lead to problems like back pains, abrasions, muscle pains and the like. Therefore, hollow blocks must be lighter. Light aggregates must be used like lahar, carbonized rice hull and rice hull ash.…

Ceramics encompass such a vast array of materials that a concise definition is almost impossible. However, one workable definition of ceramics is a refractory, inorganic and non-metallic material. Ceramics can be divided into two classes: traditional and advanced. Traditional ceramics include clay products, silicate glass and cement; while advanced ceramics consist of carbides (SiC), pure oxides (Al203), nitrides (Si3N4), non-silicate glasses and many others. In OGMR vision, a special attention should be driven to the traditional ceramics, specifically to clay products. Ceramics offer a lot of advantages compared to other materials. They are harder and stiffer than steel; more heat and corrosion resistant than many other materials or polymers; less dense than most of metals and their alloys; and their raw materials are both plentiful and inexpensive. Ceramic materials display a wide range of properties which facilitate their use in many different product areas. In case of valorisation of natural resources of the country, the project wishes to focus on creation of ceramic production units, therefore, the sponsors‟ attention should focus on a number of certain clay, feldspar and kaolin deposits.…

Clay ware takes on varying physical characteristics during the making of pottery. Greenware refers to unfired objects. Clay bodies at this stage are in their most plastic form. They are soft and malleable. Hence they can be easily deformed by handling. Leather-hard refers to a clay body that has been dried partially. At this stage the clay object has approximately 15% moisture content. Clay bodies at this stage are very firm and only slightly pliable. Trimming and handle attachment often occurs at the leather-hard state. Bone-dry…
