Part I : Introduction to Baptism
John the Baptist was calling people to repent, turn from their sins, and be baptised. John was foretelling the coming of the Messiah - Jesus.
Then all of a sudden Jesus appeared on the scene and asked John to baptise Him. John said I need to be baptised by you.
Jesus told him that that he needed to do this so to fulfil the prophets stories. So Jesus was baptised by John and as he came up from the water the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus like a dove.
A loud noise also occurred and witnesses said they heard a voice spoke saying "This is my son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased."
This was the start of Jesus' ministry and as a way of following Jesus' way we start our Christian Lives with a baptism, not of John, but of Jesus.
Everything which happens is done in Jesus's Name.
So baptism marks the being of our journey and Jesus will walk with us for the rest of our earthly life until we meet him face to face in heaven.
The wider Church also welcomes the baptised and they are members of the Church Worldwide, not just St Hilda's. The baptised will be made welcome wherever they visit, live or go in this world. It's all because Jesus want to be with us everywhere in both good and bad times. He is with us as we take the next step. The Christian Life is therefore a journey. We walk with Jesus and other followers.
We journey in a group for a while, then some others may join, whist others move on a slightly different path towards heaven. Because all paths finally lead to the Gates of Heaven where we will be welcomed.
During this journey we growing up in body as well as in spirit. When we grow in body, and become adult we may then release our godparents whom promised to show us the way at our baptism.
