ABSTRACT
Poverty in the Philippines or even in other countries still exists. Eight of ten Filipinos subsist under extremely poor conditions, earning below the poverty line, an independent research agency disclosed.(Claar,2007). Poverty reduction is a three-part problem. It involves stemming the fall of households into deeper poverty, enabling poor people to move out of poverty, and preventing the non poor from becoming poor. Poverty line among people will always be there so it is up to the person if he/she can survive for we can’t avoid it.
INTRODUCTION
Poverty is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute poverty or destitution refers to the deprivation of basic human needs, which commonly includes food, water, sanitation, clothing, shelter, health care and education. Relative poverty is defined contextually as economic inequality in the location or society in which people live.(Wikipedia) About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. Yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish their selves. Being constantly malnourished, they become weaker and often sick. This makes them increasingly less able to work, which then makes them even poorer and hungrier. This downward spiral often continues until death for them and their families. (Ravallion,2005) That’s why the researchers planned to study one family to know more about poverty deeply. We can always say that poverty is all about economics but the researchers can prove to you that it’s not just about that, it’s all about life. Many people nowadays are experiencing that thing but some can still hold on and survived because according to economics it’s not permanent, but according to some experts, it is us who makes it permanent. Poverty is widespread in the Philippines. From the north of Luzon to the southernmost island of Mindanao, poverty can be witnessed among the inhabitants of the country. According to a 2006 survey done by the National Statistical Coordination Board, 26.9% of Filipino families, or 32.9% of Filipinos were living below the poverty threshold–the minimum income or expenditure required for a family or individual to meet the basic food and nonfood requirements.(NSCB,2006)
Significance of the Study Through this Case study the survival among people in poverty line will be able to share their perception to life, economic status, attitude toward work and success, educational attainment and job attainment. This will give the readers the information on how they handle there lives behind the struggles that they encounter everyday of there lives. This then would as well give an awaken call for all the people, especially our very own government officials.
Scope and Limitation This case study will only focus on people in poverty line in the Philippines. Based on the research, to survive, an average family of six will now have to earn 5,581.65 a month, the research agency said. On a nationwide scale, the average family will need 2,550.10 for monthly food expenses. (Sentilles,2009). We only limit the study among people on poverty line in the Philippines. Specifically, it will only deal with how the people in poverty line survived in their lives, economic status, work, success, educational and job attainment. The researchers decided to interview one family experiencing hardships with their family lifestyle and attainment. Definition of terms
Awaken Call- this means a reminders
Poverty Line – poor life
Perception- realizes or notices things that are not obvious
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE One of the most talked about issues in the country since then, is poverty. or low-income countries, the appropriate definition of "poverty" is often based on the minimum level of consumption needed to keep body and soul together. For higher-income countries, poverty is almost always set as a relative measure: that is, an amount that would be too far below the standards commonly prevailing in that society. As low-income countries become better off, they typically start raising their poverty lines.(Ravallion,2012) Ibon Databank estimate that 47 million Filipinos, about 80 percent of the country’s population live below the poverty line, up from last year’s estimate of 70 percent. Ibon Databank’s estimates are based on the assumption that income distribution did not vary from the 1988 findings of the NSO and that income is equated with the country’s gross domestic product. Threshold figures are simply inflated from 1988 to 1992 figures. (I.D,1992) In order to understand the scale of the poverty-environment problem, it is important to first consider some cross-country indicators of poverty and environmental change. The ratio of people to forested land is more than three times higher low-income than in high-income countries. (Smith,2011)
Twenty-two thousand children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.(UNICEF,2010)
As we research more on poverty we discovered that there are ways to solve poverty, Just to give the readers an idea, poverty can be solve because it is just temporary. To give you example on ways how to solve poverty is” the guarantee of shelter, healthcare, education, food and drinking water as basic human rights that must be provided free to all. “An end to private monopoly ownership over natural resources, with a minimum of 51% local communal ownership in corporations, which control such resources as well as the termination of intellectual property rights on pharmaceutical drugs. “ This solutions maybe helpful but we the researchers have read that” Poverty will never end unless there are real solutions to end it; solutions based on economic justice and political changes.” (World leaders,2012)
Methodology Research Design. The research used in case study method by interviewing a representative in a family. Research environment. The study was conducted in the house of Mr.Alex Petil, neighbor of Mary Lyncel Lumjod Patrocinio. This is located in Bagacay,Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental,Philippines.
Subject. The respondent of the study is selected only for we are only limited in one family. The researchers interviewed one representative of the family and that is Mr.Alex Petil, the head of the family.
Material. The researchers prepared questions for the interviewee. The questions were made and organized personally by the researchers. The researchers prepared paper and pen for the answers of the interviewee. Procedure. The researchers personally interviewed the father of the Petil Family.
Analysis. Unable to meet their basic needs most of the time, victims of poverty search garbage cans for leftovers, look for new places to sleep in, and sometimes steal from those who have what they need. We feel sorry for them, but what is the use of sympathy to them? All we do is sympathize, yet we expect our nation to progress.
DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION
Based on the researcher’s study, they concluded that the family of Mr. Alex Petil is just one of the thousands of people who is suffering from poverty line. He was one of the persons in the poverty line who strived to eliminate their current situation. Being their head of the family, he really worked hard to sustain and feed his 6 children and his wife. It has been 2 years since his youngest child died because of a severe illness. That incident was the most tragic experience he ever had in his 48 years of existence. He blamed himself for being such a selfish and a very careless father to his child. He never thought that it would end up to the point that he would lose his daughter at a very young age. As young individuals, we must have proper education to be able to know the consequences that we might face in the nearer future. It is the obligation of the parents to let their children go to school and let them learn proper attitude and avoid bad habits and bad influences. The researchers also realized how family planning is very important and very crucial for a couple to know and set their limitations to provide the basic needs of their children. Out of the many disadvantages of poverty, there are also advantages in it. Mainly, it serves as a lesson, at the same time, it motivates them to work hard so that they can survive not just themselves but also their family. Also, for the teenagers to realize the value of an educated life.In our simple way, we can help lessen people who are affected by poverty. That simple way starts within ourselves through discipline and determination to reach the goal of success. As the researchers see, there is a big difference between the economic status of an individual sent to school. Based on the researcher’s study, Alex Petil and his family survived and is still surviving from poverty. Therefore, poverty is very rampant and is still existing in the Philippines.

Many people in this generation would label themselves as poor, but sometimes the line between each class is misunderstood and blurred due to wants instead of needs. Believe it or not there are different levels that describe the underprivileged. Poverty can be divided into about five diverse subgroups, which are transitional, marginal, residual, absolute and relative (Carl, Page 30). No matter which description of poverty a person may fall into the effects of this social class can be great. A life of being deprived of basic necessities affects not only adults, adolescents, and children, but also it is damaging to newborns. Poverty goes hand in hand with altering a person’s emotions, diets, and their home situations, which can leave harsh effects…
