Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher, is a story told from the perspective of Clay Jenkins, receives a box in the mail full of 13 cassette tapes recorded by one of his friends, Hannah Baker, who committed suicide. Hannah left behind these 13 tapes to explain the 13 reasons why she killed herself. As you read this novel you will feel all the emotions that not only Clay feels as listening to the tapes, but Hannah as she is living through all these moments. A shoebox- sized package gets left on by Clays front door, full of tapes. Each tape has a dark blue number painted with nail polish. But it’s not always about that sometimes it can be mental disorders that can drive people to suicide, or even that some does something or something bad happens and they think suicide is the easy way out. Forgetting how it will make the people they left behind feeling. If we get away from this thought that suicide is for attention, people would be more open about the fact that they have been thinking about it. Then we would be able to save many more lives from suicides. In this novel, in Hannah class her teacher left a bag to put notes about the teachers teaching or recommend topics for future discussions, and Hannah finally built enough courage to write “Suicide, it’s something i’ve been thinking about.” Hannah mostly put this in there because she wanted to hear the classes thoughts and feelings. One girl in the class said what everyone else was thinking “It’s like whoever put this note just wants attention. If they were serious, they would have told us who they were”(158). At the end of class, the teacher passed out a flyer, The Warning Signs of Suicide Individual, and in the top five was a sudden change of appearance and Hannah just recently changed her appearance.
