This chapter presents the research design, the respondents of the study, the research instrument to be used, data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment.
Research Design
To achieve the objective of this study, the researchers used the descriptive method. Descriptive method is a general procedure employed in studies that has a chief purpose of describing a certain phenomena. Rivera (2007) refers this to a design, which describes the nature of a situation as it exists at the time of the study and explores the course of a particular phenomenon. This method is used to discover facts on which professional judgment could be based. It involves the description, recording, analysis and interpretation of what it is. It is used in many fields of investigation due to its applicability to solve different kinds of problem (Rivera, 2007).
The method of research used in this study involves observing and describing the understanding of the compliance of online news to the ethical standards of Philippine journalism based on the perception of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina students in academic year 2013 – 2014.
Respondents of the Study
The chosen respondents of the study were the students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina in academic year 2013 – 2014. The researchers used the data of the current number of enrollees of the said academic year.
Data Gathering
This chapter covers the procedure of the analysis of the data gathered in the study. The instruments used in the study were survey and interviews.
Survey is used when the objectives of the study is to see a general or specific picture of the population under investigation in terms of their social and economic characteristics, opinions and their knowledge about or behavior towards a certain phenomenon covering either relatively large population under investigation called “census” or with a limited scope which covers only a portion of a population under study called “sample survey” (Rivera, 2007). The researchers come up with actual gathering of information. The questionnaires had a profile section that contains the following: name, age and gender.
The survey included the perception of the students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina in academic year 2013 – 2014 to the compliance of online news on the ethical standards of Philippine journalism.
An interview was also conducted to collect and cluster information from the respondents.
Statistical Treatment
The following formulas were used in the study:
Weighted Arithmetic Mean – Each value / measurement differ in weight or degree of importance. __ X = Ʃ x W ƩW
Where: __ X = Mean X = Measurement W = Weight
Percentage – Percentage Frequency Distribution is defined of observation that shows the grouping of data points, a useful method of expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other data.
P = F / N x 100
Where:
P = Percentage
F = Frequency
N = Number of Respondents
