They All Just Went Away Poem Analysis
This poem makes me think that for how innocent the poem’s wording is, there appears to be a foreboding tone behind it. You have to wonder was that poem that left in all of the guests rooms intentionally or was it purely coincidental and simply an innocent nursery rhyme? Not only is the poem talking about how all of the soldier boys depart in one way or another, but there is also the fact that there are ten toy soldier figurines. Do these harmless things represent the people who have come to stay or are they merely pretty knick knacks to look at?

2. “You lost touch with the world--an island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, from which you might never return.” (Pg 25)

What is strange to me is how even those these objects are childish,

Saying that it is a world of its owns makes me think that the island is secluded and is inaccessible to outsiders.

3. “There was nothing hidden in this house, nothing concealed. It had no atmosphere about it. Somehow that was the most frightening thing of all….” (Pg 47)

This quote provides an image where the house’s pristine and ordinary impression is causing an air of uneasiness. From this quote I can gather that when there is nothing to be afraid of, a sinister and suspicious aura can still be felt. Will this feeling about the house stay the same or is it merely a sense of being uncomfortable. How does this mood affect the conflict of the

“Yes that was it-- frightened! She looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear… A little shiver passed down Vera’s back. What on earth was the woman afraid of?” (Pg 23)

5. “Queer business when you think about it--the whole thing was queer--very queer…..” (Pg 21) (repetition)
This quote uses the word queer more than once and this has the effect to where it leaves an air of questioning and throughout the book the word queer is used over and over again. Christie manages to keeps us in suspense even though she uses an omniscient third-person narrator. Take the moment that the guests realize they’re the only ones on the island. Suspense is a major mood in the story as it is up to the reader to try to figure what is going on by inferring and using the subtle clues that are given throughout the story.

6. “In the midst of life we are death” (pg 53) (mood)
This quote makes me think that this book has a deeper meaning as it goes into depth about life and death and it leaves me the message of how there are some things that we should and cannot decide for ourselves. From the character’s perspective, it feels that they are simply acknowledging our mortality. Life is only temporary and despite our best efforts to try and evade death, at one point or another we meet our fate as it seems like our unsuspecting visitors have.So even though they are alive at this point, somewhere along the

The beginning of the poem starts out very depressing, the soldier talks as if they are old men on their death beds. ""Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge"(2), this line implies how miserable the soldier 's are, their sick, weak, and enduring unbearable conditions. They are walking toward their camp, which the poem tells us is quite a distance away. But they are so tired they are sleeping as they walk toward the camp. These men don 't even have sufficient clothing, some have lost their boots and most are covered in blood. "Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots / Of tried, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind"(6-7). This line tells us that these men are so exhausted they have become numb to the war and blood-shed around them. The soldier 's have become numb to the 5.9 inch caliber shells flying by their heads, the bombs bursting behind them, and their fallen comrades body 's lying next to them.…

When reading this book you can easily see, as the reader, that the setting repeats itself over and over again. That is something not to judge a book by, this is a really good book with great setting because the setting…

The themes of these two poems relate to the effects war has on soldiers, whether they are friendly or enemy. “Whether as enemies they fought, or fought with us, or neither; the sand joins them together.” This quote from “Beach burial” shows how pointless war is, and how whether they fight with or against each other, they are equal. “Homecoming” broadcasts this idea through the entire poem, using a wide range of poetic techniques as a backbone.…

In complete contrast with the reality of the poem’s setting, the touch of snow is equated with an image of lying under a blossom-laden tree in England. The home fires contain glowing coals described as ‘crusted dark-red jewels’, this actually signifies a dying fire, a symbol of people’s waning interest in the fate of the exposed soldiers. That the ‘doors are all closed: on us’ is also symbolic, representing the total loss of the memory of the men and that…

Through out this novel, a lot of tragic and powerful events transpire. They make the reader think quite a bit on what they have just read and after this, you tend to react. These events and occurrences are the main idea behind the story and they continue to constantly grab your attention and you keep you focused on what is going on in the novel. However, too many big impact and negative events take away from the story and it's traditional role of focusing on one major element through out the book. The reader is ceased of time to actually think about what has just happened, before something else suddenly does.…

The mood of the story was mostly sad and depressing. There was a lot that contributed to the mood but this single line contributed a lot. “Shabby state of the compound - roads rutted and washed out many places-map of sanctuary had been knocked off post” (Fugard 567). The creation of mood was really descriptive and it added a lot of sadness to the mood. At that point of the book it was tearful.…

The barriers which prevent acceptance are demonstrated in The Island widely through the differences of appearance. The islanders do not accept the protagonist’s dissimilarities and his ostracism is shown through the first double page. A small, vulnerable man stands naked and ultimately exposes his vulnerability and whose confused expression signifies disconnection to the environment. The simplistic art shows how lonely the stranger is and the emphasis on the white proposes emptiness. This is juxtaposed with the satirical image on the next page, giving a sense of caricature of robust, homogenous, judging, threatening men that expose their enormity and conformity in a primitive society. The irony of farming tools being used as weapons instead of taking care of the land shows how xenophobic these people are and highlights the individual’s helplessness and the strength the pursuers have massed against him due to the fact that he is different. Essentially, seeing the satirical and mocking contrast of the two images we are able to see that difference cannot be accepted into an ignorant, homogenous culture.…

The island - The island represents good and evil. It stands for a new independent life without any adults who rule the childrens’ life. So it is like treasure island at first glance. The island is full of life - there are animals and lots of fruits to make food of. It has an idyllic effect which, however, is deceptive. - The fruits cause diarrhoea and stomach-aches. There is also the heat which is overwhelming. Some “littluns” are afraid of the island because of its alleged beasties, and therefore have nightmares. One part of the island is the jungle which shows the dangerous side of the island. The “boy with a mark”, presumably the first dead corpse, goes missing after he wa last seen entering it. - The “good” and the “evil” sides of the island are representative of human beings. Golding’s intention is “to reveal the potentiality of evil in any society and to show the end of innocence and the darkness of man’s heart.” - The island shows that besides mankind, nature can also change its face. But often changes in nature are caused by mankind. They boys make a fire in order to be rescued, but they do not notice that they destroy nature. Only Piggy is aware of the importance of nature and its relationship with human beings. - The island can also be seen as a location of an experiment. The children have to build up a society without adults, so they are dependent on themselves. But the experiment fails. Jack, once chapter chorister in the choir, becomes a cruel murderer with features which are similar to a dictator’s.…

In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…
