Chapter 1&2 In the first two chapters of thick face black heart, the author Chin Ning Chu explains what a thick face black heart means. She started off the chapter talking about a thick face. The thick face was a concept I wish I could my self-have. It stated that having a thick face you have to do what you want and not worry what people have to say. Unfortunately when I based this to my life. I do what I want but I always worry about the consequence at the end, which make not enjoy the actions I did. After she speaks about black heart, I found that very interesting. It stated in the book that you have to act ruthless but not evil. In the first chapter it explains, that even if you do something wrong it is ok, because you need to learn from it and next time do an even better job. When we go into the second chapter, she discusses the theme into another perspective. It made me realize that in my family I do have a member that does this whole thick face black heart. My brother, he always has an attitude that shows that he does not care what people have to say and does what he wants. He shows no fear in anything, even if he is afraid he will find a way to take it and learn to take the fear away, which I personally find amazing. In the book it says that you should understand your self. That part amazed me as well, after I read these two chapters I thought to my self I should start little by little adding this concept to my life. To find my self a little more, to not worry about others, not to fear, and to be a powerful women.

From its use of symbolism to the life lesson. Jeannette Walls told her story in a unique way and it made me feel different emotion. After reading about what Jeannette and her siblings had to go through, made me think about my life. Personally, it made me grateful for having a family that provides me a shelter and treats me well. Of course, we all have ups and downs, but it just so hard to believe what she went through. And how she manages to stay strong and positive, when others can easily give up. I highly recommend this book to everyone, as if it can change your perspective on…

As I said before that the others wanted to give a message throughout the entire book to explain to people that we are all one of a kind and never try to be like someone else because there is only one of them and one of you. No one can do better than the next person because we all have something different to offer and we only improve ourselves more when we are just ourselves. Basically no one is like the other so why try to be better at what someone does better when all they’re doing is being their own being. Fear is also mentioned in this book and they tackle this throughout the book as well saying that fear is seen as a negative feature of people, but should really be used as an “engine starter.” That is mostly why this book inspires me not just entertains me.…

She finds a way to rebel (no matter how small), by writing all of her stories, so that in turn, all of her readers can “pass on the tradition” of her life. With her persistence in writing to God with everything she sees and hears and feels, she is unconsciously telling herself that she deserves to be heard; even if it’s just through her writing that no one is going to see but God and her sister.…

From chapter four, I learned that being a therapist, I have to think a lot before I speak and give advice to clients. Doing this will prevent me from making a client uncomfortable. Another thing the book stated which made me think a lot is the comment about race. It said that race is a social construct, not a scientific or biological fact. It was interesting learning about how race developed into a hierarchically issue. Race and ethnicity are different things and people do not realize the differences between the two.…

My favorite passage takes place after she gets in trouble for not wearing her scarf correctly. She states, "I want to argue. I feel like a child, defiant, but powerless. Burning with injustice, but also with a hint of shame. I do as I am told, feeling acutely conscious of the bare skin I am covering". I like this passage because you can really understand how she is feeling, and how difficult it is for her to adjust to two different life styles. Some of my friends from a Muslim country said “she should learn both culture in order to understand them. It is not hot to wear hijab when you are born and raised in Muslim society. It’s for to wear hijab because she didn’t practice her original culture. She was more western nice.”…

The author was very successful in proving her point about the racism going on in the world. She first proved a point by telling her story because she is admitting that racism is something, and how she knows that it is. Her purpose was to inform people that racism is something and if someone that is young with a very racist family can overlook those things her family did, then she knows that people now can start to overlook t what happened in the…
