The most common dangerous habit is driving under the influence of alcohol. In my opinion, this is the greatest offence. People with this tendency should recognize that they put other in jeopardy. While driving it is important to be attentive, alcohol makes this impossible (Wanberg et al 17). Another bad habit to consider is eating while driving. Most of the time the driver is distracted while eating. For example, a driver spills ketchup on their clothes and then cleans it up. These few seconds taken away from the road is enough for one to be involved in an accident. With the recent development mobile phones, everyone wants to receive and make calls while driving, text and read messages. A driver who is receiving a call or texting will take their eyes off the road. As an alternative, people now use hands-free devices. Nevertheless, the driver is still distracted while driving and using the phone at the same time. Hands- free devices do not stop solve the problem of texting. This is because the driver is still distracted.
Speeding falls in the category of a dangerous driving habit. It is most dangerous in residential neighborhoods where children play along the road. Again, it is risky while entering and exiting roads. While speeding, a driver will fail to see impending risks. For example, a child riding a bicycle may stumble and fall. A driving who is speeding may not be able to break in time and knock the child. . Indicators were designed to help drivers give notice of their intention. Failure to use signs is a risk to pedestrians and other road users. Correct use of indicators will help to avoid accidents. The least that drivers can do is indicate properly while using the roads. Selfish drivers who are fond of using overlapping or undertaking also contribute to road accidents. These drivers loose patience when in traffic and engage in this irritating habit. Other drivers also lack the discipline to stay in their own lanes. They shift from one lane to another

As modern technology has advanced over the years, the number of distractions to driving have increased. It is not only a phone call, or a conversation with a passenger, that can take attention from the road- but more contemporary forms of inattention, which stem from texting and driving. Being distracted while driving can lead to fatal results. Attempting to juggle operating a vehicle and typing out a text message is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than driving while intoxicated. Research has even found that the probability of a driver crashing is twice as likely if the individual was texting than if they were driving intoxicated. Many cities and states have implemented ordinances and laws in an attempt to ban electronic device use…

Speed limits are a must for traffic control, for safety in neighbor hoods and for avoidance of collisions. Accidents are unintedtional and unforeseen, but result in personal injury or property damage. When driving on the roads, it is important to follow the posted speed limits. The speed limits were picked for a variety of reasons. One of the most important reasons is that the legal speeds are considerably safer than higher speeds. Traffic control establishes a set of rules and regulations that people rely on to help avoid collisions and other hazards. With almost 160 million motorists and 3.8 million miles of public roads in the United States, traffic control on the highways is an important aspect of daily life. Without the control of speed there would be more fatalities than we already have now. Speed limits should be obeyed. A motorist going too slow could cause an accident. When everyone is traveling at the speed limit, a car comes up going 40 mph; if you break everyone will, too, perhaps causing a collision. Motorists depend on traffic control to avoid collisions and travel safely to their destination. According to a report published by the Governors Highway Safety Association, speeding and aggressive driving are hampering efforts to reduce the fatality rate further. In 1999, speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes, and 12,628 lives were lost in speeding-related crashes. The economic cost to society of speeding-related crashes is estimated by the NHTSA to be $28 billion per year. Speeding…

This article is another informative work on the dangers on distracted driving. This article, however, includes distractions from hands-free devices that allow one to have a phone conversation without holding a phone to his or her ear. A study showed that someone texting or having a conversation on a wireless headset drove as poorly as someone whose blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limits in Australia and Spain, where this was tested (0.5 grams per liter). The study also found that when the conversation over the headset was simple, the driver drove as someone under the influence of alcohol with a 0.4 g/L BAC. When the conversation was intense, the driver drove similar to someone with a BAC of 0.7, which is almost illegal in the United States. When texting, the study found someone drives similar to someone with a BAC of 1, which is illegal in every country mentioned.…

There are a numerous amount of careless things a person could do; texting while driving is in my personal top five. So many people are glued to their phones now that they can’t go five minutes without their fingers frantically clicking away at the buttons or laughing obnoxiously to someone on the other line. Too many are dependent on technology, so much so that just answering a simple text could result in a devastating accident. Something that most don’t think about while driving is how using your cell phone can distract you for just enough time to realize that you truly have no time left. By the time the phone is put down and the driver looks up, it is way too late. If a person is caught texting or talking on their cell phone while driving, it is my opinion that they get their license taken away from them.…

Distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone, can cause drivers to take their eyes off the road for a few seconds, long enough to have difficulty responding to hazards and staying in their lane. These seemingly innocuous acts also can affect their mental focus. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that cell phone use behind the wheel actually reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent ("A dangerous distraction," 2013). A report from the University of Utah (search) says when motorists between 18 and 25 talk on cell phones, they drive like elderly people — moving and reacting more slowly and increasing their risk of accidents ("Study: Teens on," 2005). It doesn't matter whether the phone is hand-held or hands-free. Any activity requiring a driver to "actively be part of a conversation" likely will impair driving abilities ("Study: Teens on," 2005). A 1997 Canadian study published in The New England Journal of Medicine used phone records to evaluate cell phone use patterns. Crash risk was found to be four times greater when drivers were using a cell phone, whether hand-held or hands-free. A more recent study using simulators published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology reported similar findings ("A dangerous distraction," 2013).…

In 2005, a study put to test if talking on the phone is more dangerous than DUI. The results were that cellphone users, both handheld or hands-free, recated 18% slower to braking behind the car in front of them and were more likely to have a rear-end-collision than drunk drivers (Kiesbye 42-43). Which is astonishing news since no one ever compares drunk driving to being better than texting while driving. However, that is what the case is. No matter if it is handheld or hands-free phone, the chances of crashing are much higher than if the driver is drunk. Nevertheless, texting and drinking while driving are not the only life changing distractions that take place in a…

The National Safety Council states that: “cell phone use while driving causes 1.6 million crashes each year.” Texting while driving is mostly operated by teenagers, but as society develops a lot of adults are starting to contribute to it as well. Texting while driving is very distracting to the driver. Texting while driving has also become a recent and huge problem in our communities. About 78 percent of people own cell phones today and just imagine how many of those people own and operate a vehicle. A lot of people like to use social media while driving such as snapchat, facebook, twitter or instagram and that is just as equally as bad while driving. Some other people like to play games while driving. Cell phone companies have evolved phones…

Since technology has advanced in society the use of a cell phone while driving has become the most discussed problem of distracted driving due to the fact that cell phones are an integral part of life for most people (Helbock, 2015). Since the use of handheld electronic devices while driving became illegal, police are catching more people texting and talking on the phone because it is easier to see someone holding a phone to their ear than texting behind the steering wheel (Williams, 2016). Thus, people are leaning towards texting believing they have less of a chance of being caught for distracted driving. Texting, as well as most other driving distractions, involves three physical and mental actions that all take attention away from the road and are a driving hazard. The first action is visual, texting causes the driver’s eyes to look somewhere else besides the road. The second action is manual, the drivers hand and or hands are taken off the wheel while the vehicle is in motion and is operating controls. The third action is cognitive, the driver’s mind is not focused on driving, but on the handheld device (Helbock, 2015). Drivers engaged in texting are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash compared to a non-distracted driver (CAA, Distracted Driving, 2016). Texting in a car results in…

“Driving Distracted” Distractions are all over the place, and many of today’s drivers get caught up with these risky habits. “Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving, or to increase the risk of crashing.” (“Distracted Driving”). Interferences or bad habits mainly include cell phones with teenagers being the most likely to use their phones.…

People today claim they use technology for communicable reasons in the car, but this type of distraction is nonetheless unsafe. Cell phones are the biggest culprits for technological distractions while driving. In fact, the NHTSA gave information stating,”An estimated 34,000 people were injured in 2013 in crashes involving cell phone use or other cell phone-related activities, 8 percent of all people injured in distraction-affected crashes.”(Distracted Driving 2013 4). The effects that cellular device distractions has on driver results in many deaths. According to the NHTSA, in the year of 2013, 14 percent of death causing accidents were due to the use of cell phones as a distraction which, in total, was 411 fatal crashes (Distracted Driving 2013 1). The driver of a motor vehicle also can lose their own life due to not paying attention from technology. As stated by the NHTSA, an approximate 660,000 died of using a type of technology throughout the course of a day (Distracted Driving n.p.).…

When you speed, you have less time to react to unexpected situations. Other drivers have less time to react to your situation. With that being said, you can easily harm someone or yourself if not kill them by not watching your surroundings. Because like stated before, you not only have little time to react at the normal speed of traffic; but now you are speeding which takes away from the normal time, in return gives you minimal to NO time to react at all.…

Which is “by far the most alarming distraction while driving because it requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver,” (What is Distracted Driving) consequently meaning all three aspect which should always be focused on the road are taken away making the driver almost blind and oblivious to the road. Texting while operating a vehicle is positively the worst distraction because it has been calculated by scientists that when a driver is “sending or receiving a text message he or she takes their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of this, at fifty-five miles per hour, is driving the length of a football field” (Distracted Driving 2009). Just imagine how many things could go wrong in that amount of road, especially at that speed a great deal of serious damage and possibly even death could result from just that one text message. However, there are also many other devices and actions the driver may partake in to diverge his or her attention away from the road such as “ using cell phone or smart phone, eating and drinking, talking to a passenger, grooming, reading (including maps), using a navigation system, watching a video and adjusting a radio, CD player or MP3 player” (What is Distracted Driving). All these activities are common among every person while driving. Some of these activities being so common for people to do in a car, that some do not even think of them as distracting while operating a motor vehicle, especially the ones where the driver is only eating, drinking or just talking to the passenger. But when we think about it after hearing so many of these statistics we can see how many elements that are crucial to driving can be impaired by some simple multi tasking by the driver to save some time through their day or just making naïve…

The effects of texting while driving can impact the safety of driving but is the frequency-independent components of habit, or automaticity (Campbell, and Bayer 2012). They have experimented with a survey of students to validate Self-Report Habit Index; this study shows that people use their cell phones in the car on habit and tend to be unaware, that it is simply automatic texting when driving. It has become a habit for people to just answer a text or look at their phones when it rings.…

Distracted driving causes more driver related accidents than any other reason. For example, reports show “recognition error, which included driver’s inattention, internal and external distractions, and inadequate surveillance, was the most (41%±2.2%) frequently assigned critical reasons” (Traffic). While there are many types of distractions for drivers, some are more dangerous than others. For instance, this list includes such things as texting, taking or making phone calls, using GPS navigation systems, grooming, reading, watching a…
