Amanda was described as a shy, sixth grade female that eventually became comfortable around her tutee and open-ended shop and showed her bubbly personality. Rebekah mentions how Amanda lacked confidence in her ability to read and write, which I believe stems from her never being able to find a book on her reading level that truly interest her. Therefore Rebekah found that she really enjoyed reading The Little House On The Prairie books. Since Amanda shows interest in this series it would be my goal to find books with a similar setting or pioneer themed. A few examples include, “Our Only May Amelia” or “The Ballad of Lucy Whipple.” Since I know a little bit about Amanda’s personality and interest, one way I would help to differentiate her instruction is by implementing literature circles in the classroom. I could use one the books I listed for the group Amanda is in. A…

My favorite book, at the moment, but one I don’t think I’ll ever forget. The Tale Of Despereaux is by far, the best book I’ve read. It’s about a little mouse named Despereaux, who is the black sheep of the family, he likes to read the books in the king's library, not eat them, like his brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, one day, he falls in love with the princess, though, that’s forbidden. Without a second thought, he tries to get the princess’s attention, and when he does, his sibling finds out. Hurriedly telling their father, he was…

Rodriguez found reading more of a central activity than leisure. It took one on one sessions, personally with the teacher so he can develop a better understanding. For six months he gradually processed communication between the reader and the writer through the books. Therefore, when he read, it started to respond to him on a more personal level. It got to the point that if he read a book and understood it, it was like a friend. If he read a book and did not understand it, he would avoid it.…

I chose the book Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder and illustrated by Garth Williams. This book was first published in 1932. I chose this book at random from my grandmother’s house over Thanksgiving. I knew that she had all of the books and my sister had used my grandmother’s collection to read them all when she was younger. I just chose the first book that I saw and I really lucked out because it looked interesting. I felt that I could not go wrong with any of the books because they are widely praised for being great reads. This was the first time that I was reading a book from the collection. I had been interested in other titles when I was younger so I never became interested in these books.…

I would be assigned books that would put me to sleep like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because it would have no action that I enjoyed. That’s when eighth grade happened. I saw this smart kid reading a book with a bland red cover with the title I am Number Four. At first I thought it was too advanced and boring so I didn’t bother reading it. Until that summer I went to the library and saw the book under the “Most Read” section and I gave it a shot. I could see why that kid wouldn’t put that book down during class. It made me feel so many emotions I’ve never felt before over a book and I couldn’t stop reading the series, again I wouldn’t do my homework and my parents would get mad because I would read too much for once! I have recently just finished all the books in the series up to this point and I’m waiting to get my hands on the one that just recently came out. I have read this series several times because I just thought it was so…

The author of my book is Carolyn Mackler. She was born in Manhattan on July 13, 1973. When she was one, her parents moved from Greenwich Village to Syracuse and then to Brockport, which is a small village in Western New York (and the setting for many of her novels and stories). Carolyn graduated from Vassar College in 1991. In 2003, Carolyn's second book came out. The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things went on to win the Printz Honor. Carolyn writes about literature-fiction, romance, and young adult. Carolyn stated, "People always ask me, 'Why do you write books for teenagers?' Lots of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that I honestly believe that, along with certain friendships, I was saved by the books I read during those years as a teenager. They spoke to me in a way that nothing else did. They helped me feel less alone. They made me laugh. They made me feel like there was a world bigger than my high school." Now Carolyn lives with her husband and son in New York City.…

In my younger years, my parents would read to me often. They thought it was critical for me to be exposed to literature at a young age. It was not long before I read my first book. I was introduced to many Dr. Seuss books. Therefore, it was no surprise that Green Eggs and Ham was the first book I read by myself. From then on I progressed into my favorite series of books, Magic Treehouse. These books followed two kids, Jack and Annie, who discover a treehouse with magical powers. They travel back in time to the dinosaurs, mummies, and ice age. They also traveled to…

I loved hearing her voice when she read to me. She would change her voice for each character in the story. Hearing different voices sent my imagination soaring. Sometimes I would close my eyes and visualize the characters and setting. Although I do not remember many specific details about these reading sessions, I am certain that the pictures and adventures of the make believe characters were the reason the books captivated me.…

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

The very first day that I assessed Kaboneye’s reading comprehension level, I brought in three different levels of running records. I let her look them over and read the one that she felt most comfortable with. Kaboneye was able to read all of the words with considerable ease, but when I asked her what she had just read about—I would get this blank stare. At that point, I realized that it might be more beneficial for Kaboneye to be reading books that illustrate what is happening in the text.…

When I began my tutoring sessions with Amira, she set a goal for herself of moving up a reading level and stated that she wanted to be a “good reader.” Meeting her goal by moving up to an independent level E by our final session made Amira proud. I also discussed the Goldilocks strategy with Amira, so that she knew how to pick appropriate books at her level. This was a familiar concept as her teacher had discussed this in Kindergarten. It was valuable to revisit the strategy as I needed to be sure Amira was choosing books which she could be successful in reading outside of our tutoring…
