The purpose of this experiment is to identify an unknown proprietary drug using thin-layer chromatography. The unknown’s behavior in thin-layer chromatography will be compared with that of its possible component analgesics. The possible unknowns and their analgesic ingredients will be Anacin (aspirin, caffeine), Excedrin (acetaminophen, caffeine, aspirin), Motrin (ibuprofen), and Tylenol (acetaminophen).
Introduction
Thin-layer Chromatography(TLC) was the method used to figure out and identify the drug. TLC is done on a plate that is coated with a layer of absorbent material.after the solutions have been spotted onto the plate, a solvent is then drawn up the plate with capillary action. Capillary action has to do with the intermolecular forces with the liquid and the surroundings solid surface Different substances ascend the plates with different rates. After the TLC was completed the retention factors of each spot was then calculated. The retention factor(Rf) is calculated by the distance traveled by the sample then divided by the solvent. The retention factors of the 5 components were then compared of the unknown retention factors. …show more content…

Results and discussion
In this experiment A silica gel coated TLC plate was obtained and line was drawn 1.5 cm from both edges with a pencil.
The drug components were distilled in a test tube and were used to spot the TLC plate. The spot were about 1 cm between on another to give enough room for distinctive separation once all the chemicals were spotted on the TLC plate, it was inserted into the developing chamber and observed carefully we removed it after a minute or so and let it dry and then placed it in the short UV light. And the spots were outlined by the pencil and the areas were dotted with the greatest density this then helped us calculate the value of Rf the value of our unknown was around 0.23 and 0.25. And by that what we hypothesized were correct which was s4- Acetaminophen and the Rf supports that
answer.
Conclusion- In conclusion what we hypothesized came true we had to determine the Rf of all the chemicals and we were successful in doing that and obtained the Rf value of S1-Aspirin 0.61 and S2-Caffeine 0.101 s3-Ibuprofen-0.65 S4-Acetaminophen-0.25 S5-Salicylamide-0.49 since our unknown was around 0.23 the closest was S4-Acetaminophen so we were able to match our objective.
