Okonkwo betrays Ikemefuna by participating in his death when he was sacrificed. He felt heartbroken after he realized what he has done, he didn’t eat, nor sleep, he only drank palm wine from sunrise to sunset. In the story then Okonkwo was punished when he broke week of peace by beating his youngest wife because she didn’t have any food prepared for him. One of Okonkwo’s great friends Ezeudu falls ill and passes away. At his funeral the men fired the guns and tragedy strikes Okonkwo, a bullet from the gun he fired went into Ezeudu’s son and killed him. Okonkwo’s punishment was his exiled for seven years and they ruined/ killed all his things. During his exile christian missionaries invade Umuofia. Nwoye becomes a missionary and Okonkwo disowns him. “ He was a wealthy farmer and had two barns full of yams, and he had just married his third wife, he had taken two titles and has shown incredible prowess in two inter-tribal wars(Achebe, 1994, chapter 1). This talks about how he is well known throughout the nine villages and has a lot accomplished even though it was hard to get. His personality also helps him as a tragic hero. For example when he said “ Since I survived that I shall survive everything”( Achebe, 1994, chapter 3) after his first year of being a farmer when all his crops got ruined. In that it shows how he is willing to keep going and never give up, no matter the circumstances. Okonkwo had suffered since he was a child because of his father. “Unok, the grown-up, was a failure. He was poor and his wife and children had barely enough to eat”( Achebe, 1994, chapter 1). This explains that Okonkwo’s father did not have enough money to always have food in the house, they has just enough food to eat everyday. The last example is when he realized the downfall himself, when he saw that nothing was the same anymore. “ Okonkwo stood looking at the dead man. He knew Umuofia would never go to war”( Achebe, 1994, chapter 24).
