can connect with a human who is chielo the priestess
In thing fall apart there are clearly defined gender roles men and women have a the men are warriors and are the leaders of the tribe they pride themselves on status. The women had the burden of being responsible for the compounds and caring for the children. They were often beaten for wrong doings. Wifes are expected to cook and clean as their husband wishes. To men wifes are like a trophy the number of wifes shows their success and wealth.
(Achebe,87) “It was clear from the way the crowd stood or sat that the ceremony was for men. There were many women but they looked on from the fringe like outsiders.” The women simply were not as as much value as men and certainly not of the same respect.
In comparison in the christian faith God and the bible says that men and women are equally valuable. Both deserving dignity and respect. Men and women are designed for complementary purposes, to complete the other in what they lack for mutual benefits. Beating your wife is way more frowned upon and has much more serious consequences in the christian faith. There is certainly much more respect for women in the christian faith than many other religions.
Just like with gender roles, the Ibo religion has a certain set of customs and traditions they follow when it comes to marriage. Marriage is a very elabite drawn out process is to them. A series of important steps are taken by both parties. Polygamy is practiced in the Ibo religion. Having men with multiple wives. In the village the more wives you had the more status you have they showed off your wealth. Their lineage and family is important to them and it’s part of their culture. Just like in the christian faith ceremonies are a public affair with large numbers of people friends and family, the Ibo religions is the same inviting vast amounts of people come the the Igbo marriage ceremonies. The ceremony is called the Uri. When obierika's daughter was wed, her suitor brought her immediate family pots of palm wine. As well as at the ceremony the in laws family presented obierika with 50 pots of palm wine, which is a respectible number. The bride's mother and other women are expected to cook for the ceremonies. The festivity included singing and dancing. The idea of marrying your daughter off is so you can make some money and her future will be provided for.
In comparison in the christian faith marriage is gone about in completely similar ways and yet very differently.
Christians are usually in monogamous relationships. A marriage ceremony is called a wedding. A priest unites a couple to be married. Christians believe that marriage is a gift from god, and that partners should be faithful to one another and not take marriage for granted. Unlike Ibo people of the christian faith get to choose who they marry and marry for love instead of arranged marriages. Couple usually married in a local church, a beautiful affair traditionally with the bride wearing white witch represents purity. The bible tell God's followers to abstain from sex until marriage. “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” (Hebrews 13:4) To have sex before marriage you would be looked upon as impure. The main idea is that marriage is between two people and god. Devoting their lives to him yet having a partner to help guide your way to
heaven.
Religion is part of your culture and depending on your religion and your cultures beliefs people have many different beliefs on afterlife. No human knows what's going to happen in the end. The fear of the unknown is what drives people towards religion. Having something to believe in easing your mind that it will be okay the feeling of control and knowing what will happen to you comforts many people. For an example in the christian faith has an afterlife of heaven and hell. Christianity believes that that heaven is a reward for a faithful following. When you die it's not the end. Transition to heaven or hell good or bad. Heaven is everything you want life to be like there is no problems only happiness, eternal bliss. All people you love will be in heaven an opportunity to reunite with your loved ones. Only God decides when you are going to die. You can decide what your fate is with your actions by following his biblical principles. Hell is for the people that don't accept or follow the christian faith, they do not believe in God. Since we live in a predominantly christian society there are many varying views of the afterlife. But the common idea is that life does not end but it continues in eternal bliss or eternal damnation.
In contrast in the Ibo religion they believe in reincarnation. Reincarnation is when you come back as another form and you never really die. They have a strong opinion about tribe members dieing a “good” death, to keep the balance. That you will not receive peace in the afterlife if your death is not “good”. Suicide is considered a sin against the earth. They don't accept it in the tribe as a solution to any problem not matter the difficulty. "abomination for a man to take his own life" (Achebe, 207). Reincarnation is a way they share their love with the people around them by giving back.
No matter your faith all humans have the desire to believe in something. Whether if it's God or believing in multiple gods like agbala. Although these two religions might seem polar opposites they have way more in common than you can imagine. Religions are all weaved together in the same web sharing similar traits. Religion is evolving everyday rapidly changing and will continue so forever. People will never have the same beliefs on afterlife, or never agree on how women should be treated. The vast diversity of religion is growing and will never stop changing.
