The setting was in one place, which was at Unoka’s house in Umuofia.
This is because the narrator says, “one day a neighbor called Okoye came in to see him”, (achebe,1958, p.1054). the plot of this story is that Okonkwo wanted to be a winner because he found his father intolerable, and was repulsed by his laziness. But since people kept giving Unoka money, Unoka never saw it best to get a good job, instead he chose to be a bread loafer. Since Unoka borrowed so many times without paying anyone back, one day when a man called Okoye came in his house to talk about random things, then asked Unoka for the two hundred cowries he had borrowed two years earlier. Unoka just sat and laughed at
Okoye.
The author introduces the themes of status and ambition and when he describes the Ibo culture, he introduces the theme of tradition. Lastly, I think the purpose of this story is. The reason Achebe wrote this story is to show that giving can be helpful, but if you give too much it can be harmful. Prime example, Unoka asked people for money time and time again and never paid them back. If Unoka was asked by these people to pay them back, he would hysterically laugh in their face.
In conclusion, the setting which took place at Unoka’s house. The characters were; Okonkwo, Unoka, and Okoye. about the symbols, Okonkwo symbolized strength, Unoka symbolized unwealthyness and failure, and Okoye symbolizing wealthyness. The plot of this story, which was since Okonkwo hated his dad because he was lazy, he became a village hero. And since Okoye kept borrowing from people he was only a bread loafer. And when people ask for money back he just gave them an excuse or laughed in their face. And the three themes were; status, ambition, and tradition. Also, the purpose Achebe wrote this story for which was to explain that giving is good, but giving to much can be bad.
