After reading Wen Zhenghe’s “Superfluous Things” and Li Yu’s “ Notes Written in Moments of Idleness”, it is difficult to find out the fundamental differences in furniture and interior design between the Ming and Qing dynasties. This happens only because Wen and Li belong to a similar generation: Wen (1585-1645) was a great Ming dynasty scholar and painter, who was born is Suzhou; Li (1610-1680) lived in the late-Ming and early-Qing dynasties and born in Jiangsu, which is close to Suzhou. That’s why their texts of description of furniture and interior design are very similar.…
Students are using cell phones constantly between classes in high schools and on college campuses alienating themselves from interacting and meeting new people. It is also very distracting at times when students forget to turn their cell phones off and it rings in class. "Jim Spiers, an Arizona State University marketing professor, is putting his foot down as…
The book Things Not Seen is very interesting. It talks about a boy named Bobby that is invisible and one day while he is rushing out of the library door he bumps into a girl named Alicia who he is surprised to find out that she isn't startled by seeing the appearance of an invisible man it isn't until after he raps himself back up in his disguise that he notices that Alicia is blind.…
I awake before the sun. When I rise, I am greeted by the comforting darkness of the night, lulling me back to sleep. I engage in the daily brawl against my bed, struggling to get up. After a rough victory, I get out and start my day. I reach school by 8:00, where I spend the next 7 hours listening to the droning of teachers, laboring over assignments, and killing trees by taking pages of notes. Now, this scenario is not uncommon among most students. The average profile of several students shows that they take 6 AP’s, are part of 10 different clubs, and do 3 sports. To any normal person, it is obvious that this rigorous schedule would teach responsibility and time-management. I, however, learned something else: multitasking is not as useful…
In this research article, “A Happy and Engaged Class Without Cell Phones? It’s Easier Than You Think” by Louise Katz and Warren Lambert, the researcher determines the link between the use of cell phones and distractions that take place in classrooms. In order to gather this information, the researcher had her students turn in their cell phones voluntarily. With this, as a reward and incentive, the researcher used extra credit to motivate her students to turn in their cell phones to the desk. When the role was called, the students that placed their cell phones on the table verbally acknowledged their participation. As she did the research, the researcher noted that she had a smaller classes of students in a community college that all had other jobs and commitments. Alongside the research, there was a survey given to the student that allowed the researcher to have insight into what the subjects thought of the results of the study of which they were a part. With this research, this researcher was able to understand…
To get the most you can out of life you have to break it down into the necessities in life. Rather than complicating life, make it simple to enjoy the little things. When Thoreau wrote “I wanted to live deep and suck out all of the marrow of life,” he was demonstrating what he felt towards the idea of life (Walden 114). If one lives life the same and has many distractions in life, one will not enjoy the simple things in life and admire life from a different perspective like nature. For me, school stresses me and I always seem to have something on my mind. I never take a moment and enjoy life without worrying about something else. On days of stress, I try to go on a run or sit outside on my porch and look out upon the tranquil lake that sits…
While reading your class assignments you could minimize your distractions by doing your school work somewhere quiet maybe your house, coffee shop or your office. Also having a specific time and place in your schedule to sit down and concentrate on your work. Some people need total silence others might need a little noise of some sort.…
The actions that I can to take to manage and eliminate distractions are: recording my favorite television shows for later playback, elimating distracting music, cooking/ eating dinner before beginning my homework, turning my telephone off and making sure that get the proper rest before sitting down to complete my assignments.…
At the moment, there is noise all around me. A barking dog, two children on the front porch playing jump rope, one child singing to himself while playing with the honey (yes, the honey…), one child typing away on a laptop, one child texting away on a cell phone, and of course the TV playing Music Choice. The only reason I am able to write this essay at the moment is because the youngest of these children is currently taking her first nap of the day! Life is a little chaotic at our home, because six of our eight children (ages 1-22) still live at home. I am taking a big leap by starting college this Fall, but hoping that I will find a way to deal with the noise at times, while also fitting in scheduled alone…
One of the biggest obstacle that I have to overcome is stress caused by me going to work, doing housework and attending online classes(Harrington,2012). It’s like having three different jobs that eats a way all of my free time. It doesn’t give me much in away of personal time to blow off steam and relax.…
Throughout my four years in High School, my mind was constantly flooded with thoughts about college, grades, water polo, friends, and occasionally, the embarrassing love interest. I would try my very best to avoid anything that could potentially stress me out. Whether it was an important lab for Chemistry, a witness testimony for Mock Trials, or an essay for English; I would procrastinate until the last…
When walking around the school, you will notice that almost every student whether they had friends nearby or not had a cell phone out to read text messages or check voicemails as they walked around. It was once something that people did in their private and during downtime, but now it has become an obsession because they feel the need to use it every time. Also, students have no problem using it secretly in class without getting caught. In fact, some of the professors are not too strict with their cell phones policy. They allowed students to use it during class time which can be distracting and cause them to not pay attention to what the professor is saying. For example, last semester I did not do too well in one of my classes because I always on my cell phone browsing the web or talking to my friends while my professor was lecturing. I was not listening to my professor which result in doing poorly in class. In my accounting class, my professor is strict with his electronic devices. He does not allow anyone to use their cell phones or laptops. He makes sure that every student prints out the lecture notes and following along with him during class time. Without the distraction of my cell phone, I have learned that it is easy for me to understand the subject the best when I pay full attention in class. Also, I found out that cell phones also hurt my grade in English class because I realize heavily on it. When I am…
There is another reason to support this statement. On taking a break from a usual activities, say ,studies would give a pinch to the person .He/she would feel somewhat guilty for wasting his/her time into other activities. This would instigate the person to study harder and go in a faster rate with full concentration in his studies. Thus, even a half an hour break would save hours of time which would just be wasted in reveries .…
A wise strategy is to have at least one stress-reducing activity to look forward to each day: enjoying a favourite television show, reading the recent issue of a favourite magazine, emailing friends, or anything else you like to do to take a personal time out. Breaks from academics do not have to consume huge amounts of time; in fact, it would be dangerous to choose things that would encourage procrastination. Anticipated study breaks can be things you make time for at the end of the day, as a self-reward for a productive day of studying. It is important to think about the activities that are de-stressing for you, and to use them on a regular basis to prevent stress from building to an unhealthy level. Of course if the stress has already arrived, some de-stressing techniques may be just what you need!…
The students studying in schools are finding this gadget inseparable from them. A few schools are allowing the students to carry their mobile phones with them. I believe that this is not right. While the teachers in the schools are teaching, the students are busy on their phones and not giving attention about what their teacher is teaching. Excess usage of mobile phones can reduce our level of concentration and focus because of which we might not perform well in our exams. As this being a habit can never be given up and I can prove it with an example of my daily routine. I have been noticing this in my school and also in many other places that whenever people have gone on a holiday with their family so as to remove their tension and stress. But they are not able to as the whole time during their vacation also they are busy with their office work, or the regular social networking sites and applications. Vacation is meant to be relaxing with your family and friends instead of being on the screen the whole day.…
