Things We Didnt See Coming
This novel contains no hope. To what extent is this true? Discuss.

The futuristic, catastrophic and hostile world created by Steven Amsterdam in Things We Didn’t See Coming forces the human race to reveal the emotions and characteristics that are required to survive the continual environmental calamities occurring in each short narrative. The struggles inflicted onto the people of the world distinguish the strong from the weak, brave from the cowardly and the hopeful from the realistic. The hope displayed by certain characters in this series of short narratives isn’t always advantageous, but can be the driving force that wills the floundering characters to continue to endure what is left of the diminishing environment. The characters that don’t hope in this novel seem to loose the sense of humanity, given that they do not have the full range of human emotions.

From when the narrator is ten years old, we are shown glimpses of hope through his actions and personality. After being told by his panicked father that ‘the future is a hospital, packed with sick people, packed with hurt people’ the narrator simply wants to know how to ‘prepare’ for that. This naïve courage displayed by the innocent ten year old foreshadows the determination he will show as he grows older, whilst experiencing reoccurring trauma. After meeting Margo, the narrator is forever hopeful of securing her as a long-term partner in life. He is deeply in love with her, ‘It’s like wanting her to be here becomes so strong it almost makes me forget she’s not’ but finds it hard to put his feelings into action, anticipating the probable rejection from strong-willed and decisive Margo, ‘Silently, I ask her to marry me’.

‘Wild’ Jenna and her daughter Liz, the ‘softer version’ of herself are two hopeful individuals, ‘each thinking that they’re giving their life for the other’. Liz disregards the warning from the narrator that she ‘can’t survive’ with Jenna, and appears to believe that the world will

The 20th century was an event anticipated by many to be the turning point of civilisation. As monotonous as it turned out to be Steven Amsterdam has depicted his interpretation of the turn of events that would have unravelled post-millennium if man-kind were not to change their interdependent ways. Through numerous apocalyptic events, both naturalistic and man-made Amsterdam attempts to persuade the reader with a warning of a bleak prospect. The episodic narrative Things We Didn’t See Coming shadows the fragmented journey of an unnamed protagonist as he progresses from innocence to experience. The non-designation of a name enables the reader to attribute their own interpretations and values through the adoption of an ‘everyman’ persona. As the disjointed stories begin to come together, it becomes apparent that the narrator (or every common man) although burdened by emotional, physical & spiritual discomfort can triumph against the odds with a pure will & effort to survive in a dystopian environment. The new world portrayed within the text is broken, however this is only complimented by the structural mayhem in which the novel has been compiled, and the future differs greatly from what we know now… Despite the possibility that the apocalypse may bring out the worst in people, through the eyes of the main protagonist the reader is given a sense of hope that the morality and common decency of most men can survive the worst, although become distorted in order to adapt to the netherworld in which they are present.…

Everyone responds differently to life depending on their perspective; this is determined by whether it is a spiritual or a physical perspective. This affects how people react to dire situations. Will devastation cause a downward spiral in the wrong direction or will it inspire hope? The way an individual reacts is determined by what they “see”. Some see circumstances as overwhelming, while others allow those same circumstances to catapult them into great hope.…

Before Reading the Novel: 1. The pictures on the front cover of Paper Towns foreshadow the characters and plot. To exemplify, the picture is of a thumbtack being stuck into a blurred map. This reveals a significant hint as to what may happen in the novel. I believe that the story involves some sort of mysterious adventure of the main characters.…

Rodrigo has a lot of authority over Macabea and her qualities. He is able to show the side of her that her wants to see. He understands the power he has over his narration and the details of Macabea’s life, he knows what it is like to “hold [Macabea’s] destiny in [his] hand”(12). It is important to question Rodrigo’s reliability as a narrator, he is tasked to showcase the story of a girl who although he seems “to know the tiniest details” (10) about he “don’t even know [her] name” (10). In this day and age where phones and electronics are everywhere it’s hard to just get away. Our phones are constantly ringing with emails or text messages engulfing all our time. Our lives are hectic being filled with sports, dates, and other events. It’s hard to find places to do uninterrupted homework let alone time. Now, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to engage in these activities but often times they lead to unneeded stress and poor performance. I like to make a point weekly if not daily to try and get away from the unnecessary materialistic goods and noise in my life. This is not a noticed tactic by really anyone but its importance to me is surreal. Without these little breaks; the stress of everyday school, track, and relationships could start to take a toll on those things, the things most important to us. The mental stress can start to make you weary and it’s not a secret that you don’t perform as well when you don’t obtain enough sleep. This may lead to worse grades in the classroom for me, worse times on the track, and unhealthy relationships because I’m simply exhausted. Besides that it’s important to me, it’s nice to get away from the emotional and physical stressors of everyday life. Without being able to just lay down and think it or do some homework in a quiet room it would be much tougher for me to perform at a high level. I take pride in everything I do and to do that I need to get away. It’s like a mini-vacation where i can sort things out and figure out how I’m going to tackle a situation. Not being bothered by sometimes meaningless texts or phone calls is a lost art of my generation. Many people including myself become distracted by their phone or other electronics during homework which takes away your focus and may cause frustration, and inevitably underachievement follows. This is why I take my “mini vacations” from my phone and life in general to just relax or get some homework done uninterrupted. It’s important to me to…

In Haruki Murakami’s Town of Cats, the protagonist, Tengo, embarks upon a journey to visit his father at a sanatorium. Upon the long train ride to visit his father, Tengo recalls the unorthodox childhood faced alongside his father with the absence of his mother; Tengo despises his father and blames him for the life he had and when he reaches the sanatorium, he has an altercation with his father, reads him a story and his father leaves him with a metaphorical statement about his childhood and future. Murakami’s writing shares a perspective from Tengo’s point of view, thus portraying the narrative in a consistent negative tone. Moreover, throughout his life Tengo has been selfish and too focused on the negativity in his life to see the good in…

This book as you understand wasn’t an exception. I was advised not to do that but of course I threw the caution to the wind, following my awful curiosity. The first phrase that struck my eye was -“Florence had now to face a life without her beloved Leo”. But I wasn’t impressed. I supposed it to be an ordinary, trite and touching love-story, moving typical housewives to tears. The realization of my wrongness was approaching step-by-step.…
