The Caribbean is beautiful place, with distinct culture, filled with many talented singers and songwriters. The song King liar was written and song by one of fellow “caribbeanites” Lord Nelson(aka Robert Nelson). He was born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago but seeked fame in the United States of America and found it in his own backyard as a calypso artist. The song Liar king became very popular in the late 80’s and early 90’s (AllMusic.com 2015).
“Liar liar pants on fire” a common chant practice by children in the Bahamas when they know the child in whom they are conversating is not telling the truth. Talking about lies take me back to my childhood when I could not use the word “lie”! My mom would slap our mouths off if she heard us using the word lie, for us we had to say storying. At time from yards across the room we would shout out to our mom when one of our siblings was not telling the truth and say “Mommy Kelly storying”. Today storying is not a word to describe lying in my household, my kids just blurt out from across the room “mommy lia lying”. To lie is to be untruthful about the facts. according to Merriam Webster dictionary lying is defined as “marked by or containing falsehoods”.
When I heard the song about becoming a lying king I laughed. The storyline was so funny and it always amazes me how Caribbean artist can make a song from just about anything. Lying is sometime done unconsciously as well as intentionally. Sometimes it is done to protect and other times it may be done to inflict harm. Hearing the song it came across more of a storytelling rather than lying. However it was quite entertaining. Being apart of the Caribbean culture i understand what the artist was trying to converse to the audience about how competitive we as humans can be, even in something as trivial as lying.
