Thinking in My First Language When I Write in English

English is an international language that people officially use all around the world. I have graduated from Sinjil high school in Palestine in 2009. I have decided to go back to the United States to study. It was hard for me to move to a new country after living twelve years in Palestine. My brother mentioned me to enroll in the Intensive English Language Program at University of New Orleans, that’s where he used to study. I agreed him and enrolled in this program. There was a placement test in the first day of school to choose the levels for students. I did a good job in my Grammar, listening, and reading, but bad in writing. It was my first time writing a paragraph or a sentence in English that day. I had placed in level three in writing and grammar, and level four in listening and reading.
The next day was my first day of classes, I was so afraid of being in class and answering questions I didn’t understand about myself. That was the hardest day for me in the United States. I have started feeling normal after few classes in school. My teacher for writing and grammar was a wonderful teacher; she helped me a lot in my whole essays. I had an “F” in my first essay, grammar mistakes took the first place in my essay, and thinking in my first language was the second problem in the essay. When I used to write in Arabic in high school, the teacher used to focus on the general topics without caring about any details, It was like fast-writing in English. I started getting better every other essay I wrote by the help of my teacher and the practice everyday. My practices helped me a lot to be more detailed in the body paragraphs and sentences.

When writing an essay there really is more to it than just writing words down and making sure the words is used correctly. When someone is having thoughts they need to write them down and just go from there. At first it may not be perfect, but the writer can always go back and change the errors that need to be fixed. Before reading this I figured it was going to be about bad writing and one should not worry if it is not perfect. This made me realize that it is not about how you write, but what you write about and how to get your thoughts across.…

In my first essay on identity, I felt very comfortable, and I even thought that was easy, except for the thesis, in which I spent a little bit more than two hours. The rest was easy, but I did not understand the assignment and I failed my purpose of writing because I did not have a clear purpose. My second essay on community was better. The thesis statement was clear, I was more specific, but there were not stronger connections between my paragraphs and my thesis. Consequently, my evidence was unstructured and unclear. Then, in my third essay on competition, I did not add transitions in my paragraphs and I did not preserve the logical flow of the story. My fourth essay on Romance, was my favorite, my ideas were clear in my mind but not on my paper; the thesis was long and lacked of clarity to support my assertions. Next, my fourth essay on entertainment, I jumped from one idea to other without sticking to my thesis and my position was not clear. Finally, in my last essay on nature, what I feel was the worst of my essays; I used an assumption very difficult to illustrate and I misunderstood the assumption which leaded to lack of coherence and unity.…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

Secondly, I have chosen three items, namely, cause, contrast and argument paragraph. Those are three topics that I have written the most recently. They can show my improvements in writing paragraph skills. In these items, I want to improve many things such as ways of using comma splice, how to use words more reasonable and widening my ideas. Actually, I have not had good performance in this semester. I have made many mistakes. I used grammar uncorrectly or used wrong verds’ position as well as adjective and noun. My ideas are not often clear and limited, so my writing is very boring without much creativity and many evidences. Besides, because I now base on Internet so much, it seems to be difficult for me to make new ideas and write at class, which results in the fact that my paragraph isnot perfect and good. Sometimes I really feel depressed and donot know what I should do. Thanks to my writing teacher, however, I have improved quite a lot. For example, I donot use wrong phrases “such as”, “ result in” and so on and adjectives’ position as well as how to use comma splice in contrast and…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

Academic writing is an art of expressing and transforming thoughts and ideas into physical form to deliver information logically and scientifically. This skill needs to be refined and practiced constantly regularly. After three months of taking ESL 273, I have accumulated various experiences in writing advanced sentences and organizing academic essays which are really necessary for me to perform well in the next English course, ESL 5, as well as other classes. As a result, I think I am well-prepared and ready for the next coming course ESL 5. During the ESL 273 course, one of my strengths which is the ability of using various examples as well as explanations to reinforce my main ideas and make them more persuasive is gradually improved. For example, in my writing assignment titled “Littlemindedness- Little Limit to Go Over”, I used my personal experiences such as the diminution of discriminative thoughts and the opportunities I felt when I went from high school to college. Moreover, I also used the reality happening to the curriculum in my home country, Vietnam, in order to strengthen my attitude that coming to De Anza College can generate a significant chance to my life. In addition, I realized how important and essential transitional words are in writing an academic essay and gluing my ideas, sentences, and paragraphs together. Thus, I always keep trying to use a variety of transitional words and phrases in my essay to make it become more coherent and cohesive and avoid making discrete information. In the article “The Advantageous Policy on Immigrants”, I used some transitional words like consequently, in addition, moreover, as a result, after all, and nevertheless to create smoothness for my essay. As a result, the quality of my essays will be improved, and I will be successful in expressing and illustrating the flow of my thoughts. However, after completing 4 in-class essays, I realize that…

Before taking this English 101-A course, I had a particular perception when it came to writing essays and English language. In High school, I was a really lazy student. As lazy as they can come, I was that times 10. For as long as I can remember I had always coasted through Elementary school and Middle school with really great grades. I would take honor roll courses and get straight A’s and 1 B almost every year. So by the time I had reached my first year in High school 9th grade, I decided I didn’t have to pay attention to anything or anybody because I thought I was so smart. I literally attended school from 9th grade to 12th grade to pass. I thought it would serve no higher purpose to me other than a time to get in some solid nap time, get…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

Back then when I was in my school, my writing teacher way of teaching me is very conventional. Every day, in class, whenever we are doing our writing class, the teacher will simply gives us a topic to write on. Before we start on writing, the students will be given chance to brainstorm on the idea, then, show it to teacher, if the teacher did not like the idea, we will have to change it and we will have to show it again to the teacher until she find it rational. After that, we will given some time finish the writing before sending it to the teacher. The teacher then will check the essay and give it back to us to be compared and discussed.…

The beginning of high school I was a seed in English class. I was not particularly good at English and had doubts on whether I should ask the teacher to move me down to the college prep class. Just like a seed, I was a plain little student sitting in an honors class. Maybe from last year’s English class, I was fully aware my writing was not anything special. That was what I thought because I compared myself to my friends, but for sure, one thing I was positive was that writing was my strength in English rather than vocabulary and reading comprehension. With a portfolio with all my past essays in front of me on my desk, I flipped through it. I noticed that my essays were not well-organized, and I had trouble with structuring my essays. However, at the same time, I saw that I had a variety of transitions, and clear topic sentences. The topic sentences were not creative because it was in a basic format, but I knew she could work on that the upcoming year. Thanks to the portfolio that my teacher handed out at the start of the school year, I was able to realize that my writing can change and believed that if I put time and effort through the year, my writing may become a flower one day and bloom beautifully. I sat down in that classroom, day after day, learning new ways to improve. Eventually, almost a year of 9th grade passed.…

When writing an essay I usually do very bad, on my grammar mostly. Im not good with where my commas, semicolons, some quotation marks go. I need to work on my citations, thesis statements, and how to tie everything in to make a good conclusion. Other problems for me to work on are my transitional words, and how to stop using words repeatedly, word choice. Usage of the wrong verbs, pronouns, nouns and more. In high school we had to write papers that wasn’t really hard and they actually babied us . Therefore most students from high school going in to college like me are not ready for college level…

Every time Whenever I get my essay back, the teacher puts circles all over the paper. They keep telling me that I need to redo this the entire paragraph or something is not clear and that I need to write more when I've explained everything I could about the topic. Also, my essays are so short, which is why that I am constantly getting low grades for my English classes. I can never think of anything to write about to make the essay longer and it is very frustrating. On the other hand, I was wondering why there are some students that get excellent grades on their essays like it's nothing very easily. I started to look for my weaknesses and strengths in writing and how to improve my language.…

The essay we first wrote was the introduction essay, it was simply to get to know different interesting things about each student and get a feel for how we all write. On this paper I did well writing all about fostering kittens back home with my family. My details were good, I had a clever title, and my word choices really helped not make the paper repetitive, all of this good content I had in my paper put me at a grade of 90% on this paper. I struggled with a few smalls things on the first paper of the semester, punctuation was a slight struggle, I needed to not use exclamation marks and know when to spell out numbers. My punctuation problem also overflowed into major problems I had on this paper, which were commas. Commas were something I had a big problem with the whole semester, the problem dwindled as we kept writing, but this problem was most prominent in this first introductory paper. Another large problem I had was using words like I and you throughout my paper. To revise this paper I took out the you and Is I had put in there. I also not only checked twice, but three times for comma mistakes.…
