This Common Secret By: Susan Wicklund Susan, the main character, grew up in Trade Lake, Wisconsin. She has a daughter named Sonja who gave her great-grandma the nickname Flower Grandma. One day, Susan went to her Grandma’s house to tell her what kind of doctor she was. Susan was an abortion doctor. This was February of 1992. When Susan told her grandma what kind of doctor she was, she became quiet and led her to a rocking chair. She told the story of her best friend when they were sixteen years old. Her best friend had become pregnant so she asked for help from her friends. Flower Grandma, her sister, and Violet were to help out. They had heard if you put something long and sharp “up there”, it could end the pregnancy. She started to bleed uncontrollably, and they put rags inside of her to try to make it stop. She ended up dying from the loss of blood. In 1976, in Portland, Oregon, Susan had a horrible abortion experience. She was dating a guy named David, had three jobs, and no money. While having her abortion she kept asking what was happening, but the lady was getting impatient with her questions. Then the male doctor was very rude to her as well. Her daughter Sonja’s birth was a more positive experience because of the home birth and having loved ones surround her. A few years later, she decides to go to medical school. She enrolled at University of Wisconsin, River Falls majoring in sociology. She was recently divorced, so Sonja went everywhere with her. She then met a man named Randy and they started spending a lot of time together. Randy loved Sonja as well. After three years of going to school she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology and went to medical school. Susan and Randy get married in 1987. From about this time she really got into her career as an abortion
