Cell Phones- Cell phones originally started out as a voice network, basically like a radio with many repeaters. As the technology grew from just a standard voice network to being able to send messages and finally to the modern smartphones we have today that are able to send data and voice.
Landline phones- Since they started back in the early 1800’s by Mr. Bell, the copper connected land line has been on a voice network. The Landline works by the first line sending a signal that goes through switches to which is connected to its final destination.
SMS / Text Messaging- This service uses data communication. If a text message is sent it is then stored in a central short message center (SMS), then it is sent from there to its final destination.
Fax Machine- The original fax machines sent there faxes over the voice network since the used the same lines as the landline system. With the current copper lines which were used for voice now being used also for a data network, a fax may be sent either by data or voice, depending on the machine being used.
Pagers- Pagers in the beginning were on a satellite network which would have classified them into the data communication slot. But now with pagers that receive both numbers and voice mails they are more like a cell phone. In which case they would be labeled both data and voice communication.
VOIP (voice over IP) phones- VOIP basically let a person make a phone call over a data network. This allows a business or home to reduce cost buy making calls and not having to pay and or install a land line.
Skype/ Facetime- Skype and Facetime are basically a VOIP network. They both create a data packet that is sent over the network to their destination where they are translated back.
