Most people do not realize what our presidents have done for us. One of the most important presidents to the American people is without a doubt Thomas Jefferson. He is a very intelligent man. According to the University of John Hopkins Press, “His advocacy of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 effectively doubled the size of the United States and extended Jefferson 's hope for an “empire of liberty” across the Americas.” Many people also did not know that Jefferson abolished the slave trade. Thomas Jefferson has done many things for this country. When Jefferson comes to mind, people think of the Louisiana Purchase and the Abolition of Slave Trade.
Jefferson was a visionary for the choices he made in office, one of them being the Louisiana Purchase. This was very significant to America’s history because not only did it double the size of the United States but it also provided a way to have trade ports down south. The land bought from the French cost 15 million dollars and amassed 828,000 sq. acres. Fawn

Jefferson’s perspective, he envisioned the northern half of the Louisiana territory as a huge Indian reservation. Yet critics, citing Jefferson’s earlier view of the nation as an “empire of liberty,” now saw an “empire of slavery” when the administration took no action on slavery in the vast region. In the 1780s Jefferson favored limits on the spread of slavery, but he had become resigned to the fact that slavery was an economic necessity for southerners.” Jefferson bought the land from the French because he was afraid of the Indians attacking the French and that if the French settled then they would not be able to use New Orleans as a port to ship their goods.
