Summary: Jefferson strongly believes that every man deserves the basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Personal Response: I applaud Mr. Jefferson for standing up to the king of Great Brittan for the rights of man but I am appalled that he never stood up nor mentions the rights of women. In every line he refers to men, but never once does he refer to women. I am fully aware that during the time period women didn’t have rights but if Jefferson had added women to The Declaration of Independence it may have sparked rights for women earlier in history thus changing the
path woman had to take throughout history. He does mention that people should have the ability to abolish and alter certain things in the government (Jefferson 262) but I wonder if women in his eyes were ever seen as people. He mentions the word people but I don’t understand that if women are people (and they are) then why couldn’t he say people through the declaration. It bothers me down to my core that he mentions people but in the written word of the constitution he only says men deserve this, and men deserve that but he still fails his nation by ignoring the fact that women are indeed people and they also deserve constitutional rights
