“Self-Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph Waldo Emerson was a poet and philosopher from Boston Massachusetts, who always brought forth new ideas and refining and redefining his view of the world. “Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members.” Emerson claims that society doesn’t always agree with your beliefs, but in order to be a man, you must think for yourself and not fall into the peer pressure of your surroundings.” This work impacted future writers by the expansion of new topics and opportunities to use in their writings. His philosophies encouraged writers to write about whatever they wanted.

Thomas Jefferson was a congress representative of his home state of Virginia during the American Revolution, but is better known as the third president of the United States. The Declaration of Independence was a document that announced the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent states and no longer a part of Great Britain . “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Jefferson claims that in order to achieve our natural rights, the power of Government should be maintained by men who can only use their power depending on a majority vote. The Declaration of Independence impacted the future of our country, seceding from Great Britain and becoming the United States of America. Readers were taught that you have to fight for what you believe in, and that it never comes
