According to Helen Thomas, nature is the inherent state of human existence on earth before transformation. Nature simply signifies biology or genetics. Nurture refers to environmental influences and socialization. Nurture is a way we learn new things from human beings and our environment. What we learn may have a good or bad effect on the people. For example, if we learn more skills and knowledge, we will use it to succeed in life financially, physically, psychologically, and emotionally stable. However, if we choose to learn to take excessive alcohol or drugs, it will affect the body system negatively most especially the brain. This will result to a form of mental illness. The factors that determine who we are and how we behave are environmental and sociological factors. Environmental factors are believed to cause mental illnesses. In addition, environmental exposures (nurture) which include environmental stressors, inflammatory conditions, toxins, alcohol or drugs can cause mental illness.
