Helen Kellar (1880-1968)

Helen Kellar has proved to be one of the greatest role models of not just disabled people, but also people striving towards a goal. Helen Keller (1880-1968) was born in Alabama, USA. When she grew to be 19 months old, her body was taken from sight and hearing. Through this rough time in her life, she still had hope thanks to the gracious teacher, Anne Sullivan. Through Anne Sullivan's dedication to help someone in need, Helen Kellar learned how to read and speak, just by the mere form of touch. Later on in life, she began schooling, and graduated from university at the phenomenal age of 24. Due to her outstanding energy, enthusiasm, and will, she became an inspiration and strength, which furthered the cause of the worlds deaf and blind. The development of the essay, "Three Days to See," helps reveal the true feelings of the extraordinary Helen Kellar, and also exposes an important message to the audience.

Helen Kellar has specially laid out a plan of what she would observe if she only had three days to see. She has organized the three days so she could see all the different driving forces of the world. In the first day, she would like to see her loved ones, which include friends and family. She would like to imprint these pictures in her mind of the people who have supported and motivated her for the years of hardship. Helen would like to see God's grace, which is represented in the natural world. What we all take for granted, God's beautiful creation for humans, but yet we don't appreciate, but yet, just ignore. For some people, God's beauty of the natural world is speechless magnificence. The second day, she would want to see the great creation of arts, and the beauty and meaning held within them. She would like to see the forms of entertainment, which we love. "I can not enjoy the beauty of rhythmic movement except in a sphere restricted to the touch of my hands." (p.27).     Georgina Kleege, as a blind woman, works at the English Department of University of California, Berkeley and has a number of essays to her name. Her interesting position as a professional instructor on writing while not being able to read gives her a unique position to write fabulous material as G. Thomas Couser, author of Disability, Life Narrative, and Representation, would say. Upon reading the first time, one could understand that this text focuses on the emotional aspect of disability and how the disabled cope with daily life. To this effect, Kleege uses a letter format where she writes to an already deceased yet renown blind and deaf woman able to earn a college degree Helen Keller. Using this format appeals to emotion , assuring the reader that what is being written on the paper is unfiltered and genuine, something extremely important in establishing if the rhetorical element of pathos is the cornerstone of the piece. To begin her piece, she immediately makes it clear to the reader that she is addressing Keller because she’s “having a bad day”. Her use of informal language is consistent throughout and establishing that she is not trying to address an audience in a formal manner, but really addressing herself and her own thoughts through Keller. She even addresses the fact that she is writing to the deceased, a humorous instance that she aims in making the reader feel more at ease. She follows this with a lengthy anecdote on all the aspects of her bad day, detailing wherever possible. She later explains after the entire anecdote that she was insinuating that her bad day was lead almost entirely by her lack of sight providing obstacles exclusive to her situation. She uses a tactic of empathy with Helen Keller and with average citizens, trying to equate herself to others who also have bad days. But, being that her situation is completely…

    Helen Keller was a famous icon in the 20th century. She played a leading role in some of the most political, social, and cultural movements. She was born in Alabama on June 27, 1880 and at the age of 19 months old she all of the sudden lost her hearing and vision. She started to learn sign language when she was about 9 years old but she couldn’t tell what she was saying, but she was learning. One day she feeling the water and ran her hand underneath it. She was able to spell out water with her hand and by then she had learned over 30 words in sign language. When she was 10 years old she started to understand reading and writing which was wonderful for a deaf and blind girl. Helen was desired to speak so she got her first speech teacher, Miss Sarah Fuller. She was also very determined to go to college, and she did end up going to college in 1898. Helen was accepted to Cambridge School for Young Ladies to prepare for Radcliffe College. She got into Radcliffe in the fall of 1900 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1904. Helen continued to study and stay recognized with the today’s world. She worked on and off for 50 years on her book called The Story of My Life and it was finally published in 1903 in Ladies Home Journal. Helen never forgot about the other people who were deaf and blind as well. She was willing to help them out by appearing before legislatures, presenting lectures, writing articles, and showed everyone how much she could accomplish without her eyes or ears. For 44 years she was a member of the American Foundation for the Blind. Over the years she received many awards because she inspired many people with her words and how wonderful she was. In 1965 she was one of 20 to be elected for the Woman’s Hall of Fame at the New York World’s Fair. Helen Keller and Eleanor Roosevelt received the most votes among the 100 nominees. Helen is now honored in The Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field. She died on June 1,…
