J.
The narrator of the novel, most likely based on Jerome himself. J. has a dog named Montmorency, and two friends, George and Harris. He sees himself as intelligent, hard-working, and competent, but his behavior in the novel suggests otherwise. Like his friends, J. is a hypochondriac.
George
A good-natured banker, and one of J.'s best friends. Of the three men, he is portrayed as the only one who is seriously dedicated to his job. He brings a banjo on the boat trip and tries to learn how to play it.
Harris
A friend of George and J., who joins them on the trip. Although the novel's flashbacks suggest that J. and Harris (full name William Samuel Harris) have known each other for a long time, J. actually dislikes Harris a great deal. He constantly criticizes Harris for being lazy and uncultured, and writes that "there is no poetry about Harris – no wild yearning for the unattainable" (18).
Montmorency
J.'s lively, belligerent fox terrier. He enjoys both fighting with other dogs and hunting.
Mrs. Poppets
J.'s landlady.
Uncle Podger
J.'s accident-prone uncle, who is deceased. J. compares Harris to Uncle Podger because both

I would describe the character of John J. Dunbar as an extraordinarily committed man. John Dunbar was committed to staying at Fort Sedgwick although all of the other soldiers had abandoned the Fort in hopes of finding a better life. I would also consider John Dunbar a very committed man because when he invests himself into a relationship, he carries out all that he can to make that relationship flourish. He showed that commitment through his numerous relationships with Stands with a Fist, Cisco, Two Socks, and Kicking Bird. John J. Dunbar can also be described as a receptive individual because of the way he communicated with the Sioux Indians. When he first met the Sioux Indians he was very persistent on initiating their communication.…

At the beginning of the book, he is a youth who had new ideas and fancies and sexual adventures with “strange wild emotions” (46). Modern tragedies have transformed and progressed from Ancient tragedies, not every tragic hero have to be a noble person. The short story “Mermaids”, written by Richard Van Camp is a modern tragedy, because Torchy is a regular person and the story contains tragic elements. Torchy’s hamartia, greed, prevents him from knowing the consequences of his actions; Torchy’s peripeteia, forget to wash his hand is resulted from his hamartia; Torchy’s anagnorisis in the story is demonstrated when he attempts to wash his hands with water.…

George: A small, wiry, quick-witted man who travels with, and cares for, Lennie. Although he frequently speaks of how much better his life would be without his caretaking responsibilities, George is obviously devoted to Lennie. George’s behaviour is motivated by the desire to protect Lennie and, eventually, deliver them both to the farm of their dreams. Though George is the source of the often-told story of life on their future farm, it is Lennie’s childlike faith that enables George to actually believe his account of their future.…

To start with, this story is full of sea imagery. The story starts off with children playing on a beach and notices something floating about in the sea. When the object eventually floats upun the shore, the children immediately starts to play with it. The object is described as a whale, a ship, and then a nasty sea monster. When Estebans body floated upon shore they removed the seaweed, jelly fish tentacles, and the remains of fish. We were told that he had the smell of the sea about him. The women of the town used a sail to make him a shirt. The women also stated that if he were alive “he would have had so much authority that he could have drawn fish out of the sea by simply calling their names”. Later within the story, the women imagine “his soft pink sea lion hands” as he “stretched out like a sprem whale”. This drowned man is clearly known as an object of the sea. He comes from the sea in the beginning and eventually ends up back in the sea. The relationship of the drowned man to the sea initiates his role as a supernatural mythical creature that didn’t belong on earth as a human being.…

George is calm and collected, despite his solemn mood after Curley¡¯s wife is discovered dead. In that moment, the ill-fated protagonist begins to understand what must be done and prepares himself for the final stretch, and yet his hand is trembling as he points the barrel of the gun to the back of Lennie¡¯s head. Logical, clever but fiercely loyal and compassionate, George Milton is clearly a round and dynamic character. He begins as an idealist; full of dreams of a better life; but he cannot evade the real world forever. As fate catches up with George, the stunning realism of the tale hit both the readers and the protagonist as a hard fact of life. George faces various challenges throughout the novel, and Steinbeck¡¯s vivid descriptions made his character come to life. George¡¯s distinguishing personality traits which he displays in the book are compassion, cleverness and idealism.…

William S. Harris from Three Men in a Boat, is the youngest of the three men. J comments that he always knows where a good pub is, no matter where they seem to land. He's not married and seems to enjoy living in the moment. One of those moments includes getting completely intoxicated and while the other two men are gone, hallucinates and thinks that he's being attacked by a group of swans. The fact that he is a borderline alcoholic probably explains why he seems to have such a short fuse when it comes to temperament. Several times he loses his temper and throws a nice man-sized tantrum. The others just let him rant until he gets it out of his system. He likes to pretend that he's a talented singer who just hasn't hit the big time yet. But, in reality, he's usually so intoxicated that he forgets the words and gets upset with the other musicians.…

They need a break, not just to have fun, but to get rid of the chronic case of hypochondria that they seem to have! Eventually, they decide to go boating on the Thames. The three men(who are, incidentally, all terrible boatmen) pack their supplies and pile into a skiff, along with J.’s hurricane of a dog, Montmorency and set off on the two-week long trip. Little do they know how disastrous it is going to be!!…
