(An Analysis of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple) Alice Walker once said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” In her novel The Color Purple, Alice Walker shows a theme of powerlessness, until the very end, where the protagonist prevails. Throughout the story, the reader experiences multiple plot twists and emotional scenes. Alice Walker shows three predominant themes in her story The Color Purple. The first message Alice Walker sends through The Color Purple, is one of courage and survival. Throughout the text, the reader sees both women and men having to experience harsh realities. They all found their own ways of surviving. For example, Sophia fought back and became independent while Celie did what she was told and took what she was given. Although, in the end, she showed her courage by standing up for herself and leaving with Shug to Memphis. In the early scenes of the text, the reader notices an unusually strong bond between Celie and her sister, Nettie.
