Islam has been around for fourteen hundred years and has impacted many civilizations and cultures all around the world, but in today’s world there is no faith on earth as misunderstood and misapprehended as Islam. These misunderstanding arise due to lack of knowledge, prior mindset regarding a fact or concept, influence of others’ beliefs/common beliefs or considering going against something makes you superior in the way of thinking. To counter such misconceptions and debunk myths is necessary for fostering and preserving piety of Islam.

How can terrorism and violence be exclusive possession of Muslims when Islam emphasizes on the sanctity of human life, thoroughly degrades suicide and warns believers not to become oppressors? It is strange how people associate terrorism with some faith knowing terrorism is the instinctive reaction of the oppressed people. How can people condemn Islam for the act of an individual or a minor group out of 1.6 billion Muslims, who may have twisted the concept of religion in order to implement an agenda or material goal? Do terrorists even have faith? The coincidence of jihad being called ‘holy war’ and terrorists claiming to be Muslims has resulted in stereotyping Muslims as villains all over the world. Women have a right to education, inheritance, to choose a husband, to end an unhappy marriage etc. So is not it infallacious to believe Islam promotes wife beating, marital rape and other absurdities.
Sharia Law is another common target of misconception. It has been framed as severe, brutal and cruel. It is considered archaic while in reality most laws have been developed by legal scholars over centuries.
Sharia refers to the rules and regulations derived from Quran and Hadiths. It is as justified as any other law. But it is important to understand that not all laws followed in Islamic societies correspond to Sharia some are the human interpretation of laws such as involving Some societies ban women driving, force religious doctrines upon public etc. that have nothing to do with Sharia.
As far as the cruelty of punishments for the crimes in Sharia are concerned, it is also to be noted that those cruel punishments are for equally evil crimes such as corporal punishment for adultery, capital punishment for murder, rape or apostasy. However, certain conditions are to be considered too. One cannot cut off hands of a person who stole food because of hunger. Hence, having a preconceived notion about Sharia and fearing it is contrary to
