Rhetorical appeals are the different ways a writer can influence the reader. They can be influenced with emotion, logic, and experience. Pathos, ethos, and logos can each be use throughout a piece of writing to convey a specific purpose. Logos uses logic and reason to convince the reader by supporting a topic with solid facts. Without using logos, much of what would be written would seem false and more like and opinion. Using ethos is a tactic a writer may use to give a sense of experience on his/her topic and to give enough credentials to seem believable. Pathos however, uses less credibility, but emotion to sway the reader’s opinion. If all of the rhetorical appeals are blended together correctly, a great piece of writing can be the…

Appeal to Ethos and Logos, Andrew Mack’s credibility remained not well-informed, sensible, or fair since he did not provide enough knowledge of Muslims and their religion, Islam. As well as, he did not strongly attest that Islam is not a violent, but peaceful religion using statistical facts. Also, he was not fair to his opposition, because he presumed that all religions exist the same, as in they are violent and not just Islam. Which made people who are Christianity, Buddhism, and other religions feel offended. Mack wrote and publish this article for his hostile audience, because some people may agree with him, and some may disagree with him.…

The first instance of interaction occurs when users accessing the main body of the website is intercepted by a broad, enveloping orange overlay asking them to ‘commit to vote’. The imperative use of language acts as a perfunctory method in allowing the user to empathetically participate prior to re/viewing the NDP’s political platform. Despite the epideictic urgency, it is lead into by the aporia: ‘Ready for change?’’Commit to vote’. Of course the user is presumably ‘Ready for change,’ hence their visit to the website; yet what inverts the proposition from a rhetorical question to aporia is the ‘Commit to vote’. What the user assumingly lacks is conviction. Thereby, the allegorical ‘Count on me’, precisely the ‘objective usage…

Sociology of Consumption: “Killing Us Softly” Course Code: AHSS 1050 “Killing Us Softly”, is a documentary that explains the effects of advertising. As mentioned in the video, on a daily basis we are exposed to nearly 1 500 ads a day, and it is evident not all the ads are watched, however they do manage to make it to the back of our heads. So even if we do not pay close attention to what the ad is saying, if the product that was being advertised comes in front of us we still manage to remember that we had seen the product advertisement earlier. The documentary takes a further look at the main reason why ads are made, and the conclusion made is that when products don’t sell, ads are made in the sense, telling their customers they need the product or else they are incomplete. I believe this is a general fact, everyone know that the main needs of any person are, some type of clothes to cover their body, food to eat, water to drink and some sort of shelter. However, when these ads are presented they create an urge in the sense the person believes that have to have the product being advertised. The example given in the documentary was of ageing creams. They are advertised in a way that older aged women feel they have to have the cream or else there is something wrong with them. Another example, is straightening irons, the traditional way of straightening hair is using a hair dryer, or any ordinary straightening iron sold at the store. However, there certain brands advertised in which people believe they are better which is not true. Even though all brands are the same, just because of the ad people believe one is better than the other and that is the only one they want. So when markets say ads sell more than product, concepts, thoughts and values, this is what they refer to. Overall, ads are made in the sense to tell their customers that the product being advertised is a need to them or else they are missing out on something and they are not normal. Many people do…

McDonald’s uses the persuasion technique of pathos in its ad. Using a family and a starry night, the ad conveys a feeling of comfort and happiness with the viewer. In addition, the uses of the exclamation point and happiness of the facial expression of the people there also create an aura of excitement. All in all, the entire ad is bright, which makes an atmosphere of overall happiness. McDonald’s uses these many techniques to not only attract American families, but also the majority of middle-class Americans who can afford to eat at…

Body: analysis of key rhetorical themes Ethos Appeals: In typical Lange style, the address to the Oxford Union opened with the effective use of humour which built his credibility via ethos rhetorical appeal. This approach instantly set the tone of the speech, engaging the audience, and effectively highlighted the clear differences in opinion between New Zealand and both the US and UK, on the nuclear issue. Leading up to the debate both US and UK political circles had been vocal in the disapproval of New Zealand’s position (Hubbard, 2005). According to Lange, “Margaret Thatcher sent a note through her High Commissioner, which he delivered to me, asking me not to do it.…

Ethos refers to the speaker (generally the writer) or the speaker’s character. Logos refers to the content and the reasoning behind the argument. And lastly, Pathos refers to the emotions behind the argument or statement. For starters, this advertisement contains an enormous amount of Pathos. From the first few seconds we are struck with the reality of what we as a society do every day. The woman is doing exactly what many people do on a daily basis, and it quickly occurs to us that we are in the wrong and often don’t realize the danger behind it. Our emotions escalade as she continues to drive distracted and we feel almost as if we want to tell her to stop. In the end of the advertisement, the emotion behind it almost makes your heart stop as she hits the little child in the road. His sneaker is shown at the end of the advertisement lying in the road. We are left feeling sad and embarrassed. It makes us realize how lucky we are to have not encountered such a torturous situation, but also realizing how easily it can…

The importance of conclusion cannot be ignored and it is one of the most important part of the sacred rhetoric. Just as a rhetoric without introduction is unskillful way of starting an argument, thus, likely to lose audience, the sacred rhetoric without conclusion will be awkward and incomplete. The purpose of all rhetoric is to produce a practical determination of the hearer’s will. The purpose of conclusion is to bind all heads of the discussion together and combine their strength, thus, to draw hearer’s irresistible conviction for their duty. Conclusion, henceforth, evinces the unity of the discourse.…

An advertisement is something such as a short film or a written notice shown or presented to the public in order to help sell a product. Jib Fowles, a professor from the University of Houston, wrote an article describing the emotional appeals of an advertisement. According to Fowles, “The continuous pressure is to create ads more and more in the image of audience motives and desires” (Fowles 33). The goal of the advertisements is to relate to the needs and desires of the audience. Although the Kindle ad and the Energizer ad both have relatable pictures, they have different appeals: The kindle ad uses appeals to the need to escape and the need to satisfy curiosity because it targets young adventurous people, while the Energizer headlight ad…

While casually flipping through the November 2012 issue of the popular American magazine, one might stop and notice the sweet, heartwarming ad for NyQuil. It shows a picture of a mother and her daughter sitting on a counter top dressed up as a fairy and a princess with a wig and various other costume accessories lying in the background. The mother seems to be blissfully happy as she closes her eyes so her daughter can apply some make-up. Underneath the image the words, “Don’t let a cold take away dress up mommy” are read in big, bold letters. Also written in smaller lettering are the two descriptions for Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil. The DayQuil side reads, “Help Mom feel better, faster with Vicks DayQuil. The daytime, stuffy head, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, aching, fever… medicine.” Next to that, the NyQuil description says, “Help Mom sleep with a cold with Vicks NyQuil. The nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, fever… medicine.” This touching page shows a few of the common advertising techniques many companies use today.…
