Moira’s bad attitude causes Barry to doubt his parenting skills and devours his confidence. Firstly, Barry‘s confusion in raising Moira alone, leads him to seek advice from others. W.D. Valgardson illustrates, “he sought the advice of women at work who had teenage daughters.” (Valgardson 2). The result of Barry’s confusion causes him to seek the advice of his fellow female mother workers. Secondly, when Barry seeks advice from his students, one of which helps. The student speaks, “The caged bird proves nothing but the power of the captor,” (2). The quote used by the girl, represents Barry the bird and Moira the captor and that Moira has more power which is causing Barry to be powerless. Furthermore, Barry’s anxiety makes him believe that Moira will confront him angrily. Moira says, “I’m smoking dope, six joints a day, and sniffing coke and participating in orgies,” (2). Barry causes himself to believe that if confronted Moira will say his worst nightmares, that she is doing drugs. In conclusion, Barry’s anxiety and confusion raising Moira causes him to have false beliefs and seek others advice.
The effects of Barry’s increased anxiety and confusion, develops trust and respect for Moira. First of all, Barry realizes that if he falls, only Moira could save him, affects him by showing that she can handle big responsibilities. Barry thinks, “The thought of giving her so much responsibility was like the prick of a thorn.” (3). Barry is affected when he realizes that like a thorn, Moira is sharp, but can handle tough jobs like a thorn protecting a rose. Next, while resting Moira un-expectantly speaks her thoughts catching Barry out of the blue. Moira proceeds, “I thought you were in trouble,” (4). Moira’s words affect Barry by showing his lectures and parenting did get through after all, and that she cared about him. Lastly, after a difficult climb Barry rests with Moira, and she gives out her feelings. Moira says, “I’d come home for Christmas,” (4). Moira

From every corner of the room came cries of bitter disappointment and resentment. This shows that Moira clearly rejected the idea of rock climbing initially. She decided to give it a try and the activity eventually grew on her. The cause for the initial rejection of the activity was to be independent from her father but once she saw other kids climbing with their parents, she started to enjoy herself. In this situation, Valgardson states that healthy relationships lead to a life filled with more independence and happiness.…

Absolutely furious, T-Ray forced Lily to kneel over Grits, which was nothing new for her. What changed this series of events was the next day, after Lily had woken up, T-Ray said to her “‘Would it be too much to ask you to get out to the peach stand and do some work? You’re not Queen for a day, you know.’” (Kidd 25) This was not the first nast comment T-Ray had made, however this changed something for Lily. Barry believes that relationships require lots of effort. This is illustrated by his repeated attempts to please his wife. Although he was very unsuccessful in these attempts and only gave a small effort in some of his actions, he clearly wished to keep their relationship. He included this value to show to even though men and women have many differences, it is important to work through them. This ties into his purpose because it tells the idea of differences in genders even further. The author’s use of imagery when explaining the "lack of filth" (Barry 2) in his house showed how different things looked from his…
