Britain had resisted Roman rule for over a century, but was conquered by Claudius in 43CE.
This was the most important addition to the empire since the time of Augustus. But despite all the good he was able to do for roman government, Claudius didn’t the same good judgement and wisdom in regards to the women he chose to be in his life. He married twice during his reign, and both wives ended up having a big influence on him. His first marriage was to Valeria Messalina, but that ended in her premature death. And unfortunately his life was ended by his second wife, Agrippina the Younger on October 13, A.D. 54, at the age of 63.
So to conclude, despite his reign lasting a short amount of time (13 years) he did a lot to restore the Roman empire, and proved to be fairly successful. In truth, he was an able administrator and ruled well, making many improvements in the government. He believed that the best way to rule was to treat the people as equals.
