The Titled Arc is a public art that is described as a wall of steel that curves for approximately 120 feet long. According to Serra, the purpose of the massive curved wall is to bring awareness of individuality in perception to the wall from the changes in the environment. The Tilted Arc became part of the scenery and at the time defined the space. Many did not understand the vision behind Serra’s piece of art.
Therefore, the arc became topic of controversy. The public was in uproar when they found out the price tag that it came with. The artist and the government were scrutinized for allegedly paying 175,000 dollars for a piece of what some described as a piece of rusty metal. Henceforth the public petition to have the sculpture removed, not only because of its large occupancy of space but also because it was an eye sore and a potential hazard. Artists Jeanne-Claude and Christo considered of wrapping the Reichstag in Berlin, Germany in this silvery material, a coated of polypropylene fabric long enough to flow over the four sides of the structure. A 200 ton of steel framework constructed around the structure to alter the proportions of the 1,076,000 square feet building. Between locals and visitors from Germany more five million witnessed the new transformation of the Reichstag. While few focused on the visual event, many participants were not necessarily driven toward harmony and mutual insight. Instead, their criticism became more and more fascinated on the subject.
Certainly, unlike the Tilted arc the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude work triggered strong feelings.
People were momentarily relieved from their everyday miseries when come in contact with the splendid wrapped Reichstag. For example, they preferred talking about history and beauty of the stunning visual presence of the wrapping Reichstag, in comparison, during process they were offered a stimulating distraction from the trivial troubles of the everyday life. By suspending its audience from the normative discourses of ordinary everyday life, the Wrapped Reichstag initiated a unique politics characterized by new intellectual and affective practices.
In conclusion, both the projects were remarkable achievements. More extraordinarily as the work of art the wrapped Reichstag, it transformed Germany and its people for many years to come. For a public event, the wrapped Reichstag posed a challenge to the cultural imagination of all who came to view it. Moreover, the wrapped Reichstag also created a community of dialogue in several important and interrelated
ways.
