Tim Burton Analysis

Tim Burton uses music, lighting, and color in order to compare the normal world to fantasy worlds; he shows us that while worlds that are different from the normal seem dark and scary, they’re actually bright and happy. While in the normal world everything seems bright and happy, when in reality it’s actually the dark, scary, and judgmental world.
Tim Burton uses music in order to show the differences between that ordinary world and the fantasy world. For example, in Corpse Bride the first song in the ordinary world was According To Plan which was played slowly and with piano. It was also written in B flat Minor which made it seem dreary. While in contrast the song Remains of the Day, which was the first song in the land of the dead, was upbeat and was played with piano and a saxophone which gave it a jazz like sound. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Willy Wonka has a flashback about halloween and trick or treating. In this flashback Willy goes trick or treating and he looks happy with his life and excited. But when he returns home his father throws all of his candy into the fireplace and burns it, because the only light is coming from the fireplace it makes what should be happy scene in a lit up room with bright colors, become a sad scene in a dark room with low lighting and dark colors. This makes the viewers realize that even though normal world of Willy Wonkas childhood seems happy on the outside, like the trick or treating scene, it’s really just sad and depressing.
