In a very far away land, lived a man, a man with a very different life compared to you or me. He doesn’t know right from wrong. He sits by himself all alone, wondering what his purpose in life is. He’s always wondered what’s going on in the town below him. One day something very scary happened, a visitor came. He doesn’t know what to once he was exposed to the town. This is very usual in Tim Burton’s films. Tim Burton’s eerie style is best conveyed through his use of pan, establishing shot, and front/back lighting.…
The career of Tim Burton has spanned over the last 34 years and still continues today. He has developed a fair amount of films that fall under a range of genres that have been perceived well by his audience. However, all his work seems to contain common themes and aspects, that are clearly of interest to him. Films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet street (2007) have been used to explore special concerns about outcasts and the power of your true identity. Burton has used aspects that are recognisable by the audience, for example, colour palette and characterisation to consistently explore these thematic concerns throughout the films.…
Tim Burton’s film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ warns of the dangers of a conformist society. Throughout the course of the movie, viewers are constantly reminded of this peril. Burton highlights this hazard by indicating that people who are different may find it challenging to be accepted. Moreover, in societies where everyone is similar, there is often a level of complacency and absence of creativity. The audience is also informed of the dangers when Burton shows that disorder and confusion can result when conformed societies are confronted by difference.…
Humanity always finds itself in a room of erroneous beliefs. The darkness shrouds over the light, while the eye misleads the truth. “Edward Scissorhands”, directed by Tim Burton, portrays this form of act at its finest, giving the audience the clue of how society is influenced wrongly through one’s worth of aspects. This film revolves around an animated human being named, Edward Scissorhands, created by the scientist, Vincent Prince. Edward’s creator unfortunately passed away due to a heart attack, leaving the created human being incompleted with scissorhands.…
When Tim Burton was young, he was not like most kids. While the average child would do their school work, Burton was geared more toward drawing and painting. This may signal why he has such a vast imagination, as many people have deemed him as “playfully dark/grotesque” with the inspiration of Edgar Allen Poe and Dr. Suess. Burton is one of the most famous movie directors, and his ideas are praised. Through the films of Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Burton uses narration in the beginning and drastic setting changes to convey that it is difficult for society to accept others that are differential.…

When dealing with Remakes of classic movies, directors can either capture all of the key elements and strong points of a film or completely miss necessary facets of the movie. When Tim Burton remade the classic movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) in 2005-it came nowhere near the excellence in comparison with the Original. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) have similarities involving the plot, in the sense that both movies seemed to tell the same story. But the two movies also have some major differences that make and break the film; the plot, theme and acting were those key differences. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) had a confusing chain of events, a strange message, and an even stranger Willy Wonka portrayed by Johnny Depp. While Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory (1971) is by far more of a quality movie with an easy to read message, interesting line of events and Gene wilder brilliantly played the role of Willy Wonka. It’s a movie that takes its viewer to a magical chocolate factory and teaches the importance of family and honesty.…
Two decades after first making its big screen appearance in 1983, Trading Places has proven to be a timeless comedy and can make even the most cynical person crack a smile. The film has all the aspects of a great film which include, award winning actors/actress, screen play, directing, and an interesting storyline. Trading Places is truly one of the greatest comedies ever produced and is sure to bring big laughs for first time viewers, but has received some mixed reviews over time. One such critic, Dennis Schwartz, states his opinion saying, “director John Landis indulgently directs this preposterous lighthearted one-joke comedy that channels the well-worn theme used by The Three Stooges and "The Prince and the Pauper" of hereditary vs. environment” (Schwartz). Dennis then goes on to say, “Though it has some comic moments, they soon give way to tedium as it loses its screwball comedy format. As a satire on capitalism or genetics, it has surprisingly little bite despite pretending to say something about the business world and the social classes. It should appeal mostly to those clinging to the simple-minded populist notion that they can skewer the elites in a general way, as it modestly scales its aspired low heights with slick but witless dialogue and fails to register any moral complexities.” Also, he gives a brief overview of the movie and cast as well as saying, “The popular film, crassly appealing to the crowd 's basest instincts, insultingly tell us you are better off being rich than poor.” However, contrary to Dennis’s beliefs Trading Places is not your average comedy movie. It has a rich story and helps to bring new life to an old concept of heredity vs. environment. Dennis’s description of Trading Places is unfairly evaluated and gives no evidence for why he believes the movie is so preposterous and deserves a second look.…
