The art world stretches from reality to interpretation as more young artists develop their artistic abilities. One aspect of the art industry is design. Designers come from all over the world and are taught certain principles that enable them to create visuals for society to witness. There are a lot of different kinds of designers in the design field. create a visual stage through clothing and lastly, one of the most confusing types of designers are communication designers. “Communication designers are people who create a visual clarity through concept, type, image, color and sound. A communication designer’s visual arena can range from branding, marketing, advertisement, packaging, way finding, and publishing.1” Here at Syracuse University, communication designers are well known for their immaculate craft, dedication, and versatile to create beautiful design in all different forms. Because the communication design field allows you to work in many different mediums, I chose three designers that work in different yet similar fields and each of them have a different amount of time spent in communications design. The three communication designers I would like to come speak at Syracuse University are Peter Yates, Geraldine Hessler, and Kristen Le. Australian born designer, Peter Yates has created a name for himself in the world of design. He creates outstanding visuals for branding, publication and digital media. Recently working out of New York City, Peter Yates’s conceptual creativity gives him international recognition. He has established himself in a diverse range of industries including fashion, hospitality, entertainment, finance and travel. Dedicated to his designs, Peter Yates would be an excellent speaker to have visit Syracuse University2. This is because of his knowledge of the industry, and his versatile experiences with different businesses, which would be useful for inspiring designers and even inspiring illustrators to listen to.
Branding:
The two images above are from Peter Yate’s branding portfolio. Branding is one aspect of a communication designer’s career. Branding is an eliminate of design that allows a business to identify with their costumers though typeface, color, and symbols allowing costumers to have an emotional tie to the business or company3. Talking to future designers and even illustrators about how to create a brand for a company would benefit them because it would help them understand how and what makes a successful brand. Branding is important to illustrators to because they have to create their own brand of who they are. Brands like the ones above are internationally recognized and took a long time to develop that kind of recognition. It would be pertinent to have Peter Yates come talk to SU students about branding because of his experience and knowledge in the field.
Publication:
Another part of communication design is creating consumer publications, also known as informational magazines that we as consumers buy at stores like Barnes and Noble.
Having to decide on typefaces, spread layouts, and colors schemes that allow the message of the articles to be seen by the consumer is very difficult. Peter Yates has an exceptional eye for creating well-designed communication publications, working as the creative director for publications like Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Bizarre4. If Peter Yates came to SU to talk, discussing consumer publications would be pertinent because it would help students understand how consumer publications is relevant in the business world and in the design world and how good page layouts make a good visual …show more content…

Digital Media:
With the development of technology rising with each day, digital design is become more popular than other kinds of design such as publication and print. The rapid development in technology is forcing designers to create for the web instead for print. Peter Yates has exceptional digital work in which he uses layouts and color to show the visual arena. This is also why Peter Yates should come lecture at Syracuse because he has an overall experience in communication design as well as experience with working with big business firms.
Another communications designer is Geraldine Hessler whose main work is focused on publication and editorial magazine design. As her career continues she has worked with magazines such as Rolling Stones, Trouble Girls, Entertainment, and she is currently the head designer of Glamour5. Geraldine Hessler is ranked number 27 by Newsle for her exceptional design work and cover layouts6. ' 'Geraldine is one of the premier designers in the magazine business. In everything she does, there 's an eye-catching conception and a clean approach that works very well, “quoted by James W. Seymore Jr, a member of ASME’s board of directors, comments on choosing her to create the magazine cover of The Best American Magazine: Entertainment Weekly. Magazine publication is part of the field of print design in which communication designers create visual hierarchy, and visually compelling spreads for consumers to digest.
Above is just one of Geraldine Hessler magazine cover designs. She should come in and speak to inspiring designers and illustrations about magazine publication design because of its rapid growing market and the many options a designer has to make to create a visually compelling cover that will attack consumers to buy the magazine. This can be done through celebrities or recognizable imagery. From there magazine brands are created such as Entertainment Weekly, in which the featured artists or celebrities that the main article in the magazine is about. According to Designing Magazines: Inside Periodical Design, Redesign, and Branding by Jandos Rothstein, magazine design is becoming more and more popular with the idea of redesigning magazine brands after three to four years of having their identity seen. As we develop more and more designs, many designers find themselves design magazines and then three or four years later redesigning the same covers to help evolve the magazine brand7. Just as Rothstein outlines in his magazine, Geraldine Hessler is constantly re-working and designing magazines after magazines. Her experience from choosing typeface and imagery would add to her presentation because it would help the audience understand the process of magazine design. Geraldine Hessler has experience in this field and it would be a really great opportunity for her to speak about the magazine industry and how designers work in teams to create the best-designed magazines in the market.
The last communication designer that should talk to Syracuse University students is Kristen Le. Being a Syracuse alumni, and graduating with a B.F.A in communication design, Kristen Le would be a perfect candidate to discuss her experiences as a young designer in the design world. Currently she resides in Vail, Colorado, working as the leading designer for Avid Design.
Having gone through the Syracuse University Communication Design program, Kristen Le has worked in several different areas of the world of communication design. For example, the above image is one of Kristen’s three dimension pieces in which she created a conceptual arena about the Secrete Service and what it would look like if one got an inside view of the president’s life with the Secret Service. Other kinds of work that Kristen does is print media such as magazines, banners, and posters, packaging design for new conceptual packaging products, and even informational graphics that all have great typographical choices in them. Her work demonstrates the lessons that are taught through the book Stop Stealing Sheep and find out how type works by Erik Spiekerman and E.M. Ginger. The book helps young designers distinguish the best typefaces in the easiest way possible. “When you get to the fork in the road, take it8.”
With her experience in using different kinds of materials to communicate with consumers and her voyage through communication design at Syracuse University, she would allow students to have incite on how to survive the rigorous coursework, what kinds of design are new and fresh in the market and why design is so important to industries such as the business world. She is also a fairly recent graduate, which can be seen as a positive for new designers because she can really relate to young adults because she was just recently in the same place as Syracuse design students are today.
All three designers are innovative, fresh, and dedicated to their work and what they do.
Peers have credited each designer as being well-developed and successful designers. They started off learning the basic techniques of design such as line weight, color, typeface, and layouts to turn blank pages into beautifully designed masterpieces. These designers are insightful and have had enough experience in the business to give advice to young designers and even students that aren’t in the design world, advice about working on teams, being a part of a business and just over all work ethic. It would be very interesting to listen to anyone of these designers speak and hopefully we’ll see them talk at some point in the coming years.
