Lieutenant Jimmy Cross: The lieutenant in the group called Alpha Company and he was unsure on how to lead his men. He felt for guilty for his love for Martha because he was afraid that he might not return. He followed orders that were
given to him instead of trusting his own judgment which caused the deaths of Kiowa and Ted Lavender, men from the Alpha Company.
Ted Lavender: He was a young soldier that was scared to battle. Ironically, he is the first one to die as the story makes it obvious that Ted lavender as well as Lemon are going to be killed. His death could’ve been prevented which made his life worth little during the war. In order to calm down his nerves, he had to take tranquilizers.
Kiowa: The closest friend that Tim O’ Brien had in life. Kiowa was killed during the war when his group made a mistake in where they camped which was in the sewage. His death was far more important than when he was alive because it gave the war to be sensless and to show how cruel was during the war.
Norman Bowker: He symbolizes the destruction caused by the Vietnam War. He had a quiet and shy personality. Also, he believed as well as Tim that sharing stories had an impact in the healing process to how to deal with life after the war. Norman wanted to make his father proud, so he won a lot of medals except the Silver Star because he gave away that chance.
Elroy Berdahl: He was the owner of the Tip Top Lodge on Rainy River near the border of Canada. He was also the father figure to Tim O’ Brien because whenever Tim needed Elroy, he was there. Elroy was the mysterious character in the story, however, he supported whatever Tim wanted to do which was to fight in the Vietnam War or to run to Canada.
