The Things They Carried is a novel by Tim O'Brien that makes someone face reality. War is crazy. Some things seem true and other things they just don’t know what to think. Surrealism means not real. Surrealism has a big part in the war. The hard thing is figuring out what’s not true and what is. It can be tricky, some things that may be false sound like they can’t be made up. Then that’s when their imagination takes over. They have to fight with their imagination and comprehend what they think is real.
War is truly crazy. War is hell. When someone is at war they tend to get lonely. That can also cause someone to have illusions. They can also make things up so that war doesn't seem as bad. They just can’t face reality.
“It's difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happened” (67). They might describe all the fun and games they had, when really they can’t tell what actually happened because it's just too painful.
Is war fun, or do we make it sound and seem fun? The night patrols, the fishing, Halloween trick or treating, even the smoke grande games. Those are all ways they entertained themselves in war. Those are the things that made war seem fun, but is it all fun? People in the war will say anything so that they don’t have to face the brutal reality. In the story “How to tell a true war story” Rat tells how they make war see almost fun. That's the imagination talking. There is a lot of loneliness. The stories that they tell help them bring humor into the war. It helps them stay emotionally together. The thing is, we need to comprehend what is true and what they want us to believe. ‘The sweetheart of the song Tra bong” Rat tells a story of how Mark Fossie brought his girlfriend. The boys did not like her very much. They felt like she was a show off. The Boys made fun of Mark Fossie girlfriend because she didn’t know how to do anything.
I think Tim O’Brien wrote this novel to tell us something. Surrealism is what makes this book interesting. It makes our brains think. The people in the war need to face reality even if it is painful. Surrealism just eases the pain. Surrealism helps them imagine things being okay. The imagination is a powerful source.
